Audition CC File Save Format default

Using Audition CC Build 11.0.2.2.  How can i set it so that every file i want to Save (or Save-AS) the default file type suggestion is mp3?

If i save a file as mp3, close it, create a new audio file, record something, then when choosing Save or Save-As the suggested file type goes back to WAV and i have to scroll through the choices.  Why?  if a default is not possible it should at least give you the same file type you last used.

Any ideas would be welcome, thanks.

Audition's working format is wav, so using the 'Save' command is always going to result in a wav file, because that's what everything is decoded and opened as, if it isn't one already. 'Save As' should remember the last format you used.

The trouble (and it really is trouble) with saving everything as an MP3 is that every time you save it in that format, you lose quality, as it has to be re-encoded in that 'lossy' format. Do that two or three times, and you've only really got a mess left.

In an earlier version of Audition, at least back when it was Cool Edit, you were able to add and remove file format type filters. This would in effect make the list of audio file type options shorter, making it easier for my folks to always choose the correct type.  Is that still possible in this version of Audition?

It's not done the same way now, so almost certainly not.

That's a terrible answer. I need mp3 files, I don't care if wav is better quality. Audition should let you select your default file format, not tell you what it thinks is better quality. I'm more interested in file size.

Let's take these in turn; it can't be a 'terrible' answer because it's absolutely correct. Whilst you may not care about the quality, the vast majority of users do. Not only that, but MP3 files are pretty much impossible to work with anyway - they are riddled with timing discrepancies and can only have very basic manipulation done to them. They are, and have always been intended to be, distribution-format files, not working ones.

So when you save a file, by default it has to be the format it's opened in - and that's wav. If you use 'Save As', then, as I said above, it will remember the last format you saved in. So by having both options, all bases are covered. What exactly is the problem with that?

Save As should remember the last format you saved in, but it doesn't. I know, because I just spent the last hour using the Save As function and still having to change from the default .wav format for each file I recorded.

That has to be the most ignorant answer ever Steve. 

Software must do what humans want and need it to do, this is not some sort of elitist must use wav quality at all costs concept.

Many workflows require mp3 and saving them to mp3 should be a default setting. It's absolutely preposterous that it can't be changed, for it is a time waste and design oversight. 

For those that need it, you can work in wav and bulk save using the File/ Save all audio as Batch process -set to mp3 and run.

Have you ever gotten an correct answer to your question of how to default to mp3 when using "save as".  I too have to submit only mp3's to a voiceover audition site and have to always use the pull down menu to save as an mp3 and not a .wav file.  The answer that Steve G at audiomasters did not answer this question, and only admonished anybody that would dare do such a thing as always saving things as an mp3, really missing the initial point that Mike made at the beginning of this thread.   I must have to do this 40 or 50 times a day saving as an mp3, and no I don't want to wait until the end of the day to "batch" them as mp3's.  Auditions need to be submitted quickly to get in on the bidding.  Thanks.

Oh, for heaven's sake...

The answers in this thread are correct, and they are not 'ignorant'. Somebody should try looking that word up in the dictionary before using it, I think. You might not like the answers, but they are the way it is, and you can't alter that, however much you might think you're entitled to. There is no more to discuss here; if you think you want the default altered, or at least have an option to, then you have to make a feature request.

And you don't have to use the pull-down menu either - Ctrl+Shift+S will get you there, and if you don't like that you can alter it to a single keystroke in Keyboard Shortcuts.
