Audition just giving a high pitch squeal

New Here ,
Mar 30, 2017 Mar 30, 2017

When using adobe audition both CC 2017 and CC 2015, when recording the only sound I hear through my headset is a high pitch squeal.

I' using an iMac (retina 5K)

I have a microphone that is plugged into a M-Audio M-Mtrack

We used this same exact set up and it  worked with the same adobe Audition in another computer and it works fine with garage band on this one.

I tried several different settings to even get this to work, but, to no avail. even reaching out to the M-Audio support they tried to find the problem and made sure everything was set up correctly and couldn't understand why Audition wasn't working.

Okay a hunch. From memory your Mac uses a single socket that can handle both input and output. Even q slight misalignment in the "rings" on your jack could cause the output to be looped back.

Strongly suggest you plug your headphones into the MTrack. This may cure your feedback but will also let you use the latency free direct monitoring feature.

Sounds like you have somehow got a feedback loop between the input and output of Audition/M-Track set up. Make sure that the settings are correct for your interface in Audition's Audio Hardware preferences page.

Yup, I'd go for the inadvertent feedback loop too. It may be the case that if you're recording in Multi-track that you have an output sending directly back to the M-Track's monitoring system, and that this is being mixed with the input signal and re-fed back to the input you're recording on - that's all it would take...

MarshallS: Is it a feedback loop that's causing the problem?

I agree that a high pitched squeal sounds like a feedback loop...but i have an M Track and the only way I can get feedback is with lots of very strange patching--certainly not doing things that I'd normally do for recording.  Perhaps you could give us a list of all the cables and settings you're using to record.

I have the input set for the M-Track and the Output set to my headphones that are plugged into the iMac. for the cable layout, it is the microphone>Mic cable>M-Track>USB cable>iMac

If it is a feedback loop How is the best way to fix it step by step.

I apologize for not getting back to this sooner.

Thank you!

after doing some digging, I found a jack converter to plug it into the M-Track and it works fine now,(the S's are a little sharp but baby steps)

The only thing is I can listen to it while recording but not when I go back to re listen to the recording. I have to re-switch the output and headphones back into the computer if I want to go back and listen to it.

You shouldn't have to do that.

Assuming you're running he M Audio M Track (there have been various mark 2 versions and so on) there's a knob on th box marked Monitor Mix.  One end ot this is marked Input and the other USB.   You can simply turn this to USB to hear the output of the computer or to input to hear your microphone while recording.  Or--very useful--you can set it in the middle to give you a mix of your live mic and anything recorded on the computer to give you a good monitor mix while recording.
