Checked other posts, no joy. I'm trying to record voice in mono via waveform, using Audient iD4, never previous probs but not used for a few months. When I start new file and hit record, my green levels bar at the bottom shows that sound is being received as I speak, but no waveform appears on main screen and nothing is recorded. All appears to be plugged in, input levels as usual, totally stuck and can't record. Help! PS I'm very non-techie, just read books (audio narration) for charity, never music, so please speak to me as a dummy! Thanks, Kate

Does the cursor (Current Time Indicator) appear to move across the screen when you hit the Record button?

Thanks Steve. Yes, it does. And as it moves, as mentioned, the green bar showing the volume of my speech flickers up and down showing the variation in dB level as I speak into the mic. It's just not actually recording anything. Very peculiar!

Which version of the Audient software are you using? The latest is 4.4.2 - always best to check this regularly.

Apologies for late reply - away. Okay, My Audient says it's 4.2 and 'update now' is greyed out so it looks like I've got the latest - and it's no different from when it was recording fine 3-4 months ago. I realise the dB level isn't following my speech ... it's just going up and down to register the noise floor. I've since checked Preferences/Audio hardware and that's correctly defaulting to my iD4 as input and output device. Sound settings on my laptop running my Adobe Audition also set to the iD4 and when I ran a troubleshooter on the iD4 as my input device it told me there were no problems. Finally, I used my spare mic, a high-quality Sennheiser, as it seemed as if the mic itself was maybe not working (although then surely it wouldn't register the noise floor?) but same result - I just cannot record. Playback of existing files is fine.
At a loss here! And really need to record within next few days for my mother's funeral! š Thanks to Steve or any other clever people out there for ideas.

Dof you have the same problem when you try to record in mult-track mode?

Hello Rag and Bone - thanks for that. Yes, I never use multi-track as I only do voice recordings normally. But I did give it a go earlier, just to see if it was any different but no, still not recording.

Can you give us a screen shot of your audio hardware and channel mapping settings (in Audition preferences)?

Okay everyone, I'm so incredibly embarrassed to have to tell you this, but I will in the hopes that should anyone else as daft as me post a similar cry for help, you ask them this question for starters: Have you switched on phantom power on your audio interface? Yeah, you've got it, I didn't!! Such an incredibly basic thing to forget. Switched on, it records .... funnily enough!
So sorry to have troubled you all but hopefully we're all the wiser for it. Many thanks indeed to SteveG and Rad and Bone for your time and attention.

The good thing about that is that you'll never forget it again, will you? š
