Can't rename a file

Engaged ,
Aug 04, 2020 Aug 04, 2020

I can't figure out how to rename a file. Rename is grayed out. WTH am I to do with "Untitled 2?"

I don't want to do this in Multitrack. I need this in Waveform. I'm creating various audio tones (or only attempting to at this point).

Audition does not have a 'rename' function, so it can't be greyed out. For a long time now Audition has agreed with Microsoft that file renaming is something that the OS should do. Bridge has a batch renamer, but I believe that this uses the OS as well.

Perhaps if you were to describe the exact process you are going though, we might be able to advise on how to save files with the names you want.

I want to import numerous .wav files into a project for individual processing. I see a rename function here.

Oh, I see. That's not a rename for an already named file - that's just the option to give a different name to a file that's been converted to run in Multitrack that hasn't actually been saved yet - assuming that you don't like the 2 at the end of it. Doesn't apply in Waveform view at all. In waveform view, if you highlight the file in the list (like it is in your screenshot) you can use Save As, and you can give it a name you prefer. Now it will reappear in your files list with the name you gave it.

That is literally so dumb. Like that isn't some weird niche advanced technical feature that's like a basic thing. How did they create such an expansive tool and not even include something so basic?
