Crackling In Playback That Is Not in The Recording?

Engaged ,

I just updated my ASIO driver for my Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 (1st Gen). Not 100% sure that's the cause of this problem, but suddenly I'm getting intermittent crackling when trying to edit audio. It isn't in the actual recording. I'll listen to a phrase and hear crackling. Then listen the that same phrase again and no crackling can be heard. It's like it's something in the playback that isn't matching up.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks!

BTW - this is happening in both the CC version of Audition and my old standalone 3.0 version.

Two things to try: increasing the latency value of your ASIO driver; basically, make the buffer bigger and longer. You can do this In Preferences>Audio Hardware, using the I/O buffer size entry. That often works, especially if it's defaulted to a very low value.

If that doesn't work, try reverting to your previous driver, and complain to Focusrite!

Thanks Steve. I boosted to every next high level until it's now 1024. And that didn't get rid of the problem. Crap. It seems ridiculous that I'd have to get a whole new interface just because of something like this.

If it didn't do this before, and now it does, then have a go at Focusrite. It wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer has screwed up a driver, after all...

I will do that. But I would really be interested. The Focusrite Scarlett is really popular. The MUST be other folks here who are using that interface with AA? Surely I'm not the only one.

Have you had a look around at Focusrite Forums online? There seem to be several reporting Scarlett driver problems with Win 10.

Focusrite scarlet solo (2nd gen) intermittent popping crackle - Audiofanzine

Some people seem to report success using ASIO4All. Why not give it a try. However it shouldn't really be a substitute for a properly working manufacturer's ASIO drivers.

I contacted Focurite and they asked if this crackling was happening in any other program. And you know what? It isn't. It's working fine in Reaper - no issues there. So they are saying the problem is almost certainly with Adobe Audition, which kinda makes sense if I'm not having these issues with Reaper doesn't it? But still, at this point I'm running a DPC latency test at their request to rule that out as a potential cause.

I'll update if/when I have any answers.

Is that using ASIO in Reaper?

Just to be extra sure, I double-checked Reaper. Then I opened RX7 and changed it to ASIO (it's new and was not using ASIO). It also is pristine playback with no pops and crackles.

This only just started happening with Audition about a month ago. I'm starting to suspect some sort of problem with Windows 10 and Adobe Audition.

Should I submit a ticket direct to Adobe, do you think?

Thanks!

Well if it's like that, then probably yes - at least get them to look at it. These are popular interfaces, after all.

Aaaaand without doing a darned thing, it's fixed :-P. I have no idea how or why. My only guess is maybe a Windows update or something. Sigh.

I'm glad that it's working now. I just like to understand cause-and-consequence.

Its a sampling rate issue.  Make sure the sampling rate on computer, interface, and software are the same.
