How can I stop the play button so that it doesn't automatically return to start at the end?

You likely have loop playback switched on. See this video at one minute 27

If you really want to stop this happening, then go to Edit>Preferences>Playback and Recording and take the check out of 'Return playhead to start position on (either first or second stop)' - where you can control its general behaviour.
