My question is as stated in the title.

Your question implies that you are wanting to access Audition CS5.5; is that correct?
Simple answer: You can't! It's just not available to download anywhere, I think.
All the products which were once at any time a part of the Creative Suite, including Audition, are now available only by subscription. Up to, I understand, sometime in January 2017, when Adobe stopped selling it, you could have upgraded to Audition CS6 but that option is apparently no longer open to you.
Sorry.

If you already own a license and you have had Audition CS 5.5 installed with your serial number previously then you should be able to access a download via your Adobe account.

Thank you for this answer. It almost worked. Because my S/N for Audition CS5.5 is an 'upgrade' from ver. 4, it looks to see if ver. 4 is on my computer; it was not. I had actually saved the download program for ver. 4 and ran it, only to find it automatically tried to install CS5.5.
I feel this is wrong. At the time I obtained Audition in an early version and upgraded regularly, there was no indication that that license could be terminated if Adobe went to a subscription model. I'm sure I'm not the only person who found themselves in this situation, but I'm one of the few who will pursue it endlessly.

Pursue it by all means - but not here, please. There's absolutely nothing we as a U2U forum can do about it.

No Creative Suite (CS4, CS5 etc) licenses are terminated because of Creative Cloud. A perpetual license is a perpetual license. If you've got a valid serial number then you've got a perpetual license. The software will continue to run provided you've got the serial numbers, hardware and operating system required to run it.
In the case of upgrades, you have always needed two serial numbers when reinstalling - the version you're trying to run and a valid serial number from the version you upgraded from. This has always been the case, even before Creative Cloud. Problems arise when people forget, or don't realise, that they have an upgrade version - which seems to be the case here.
Sounds like the root problem here is that you cannot locate your CS4 serial number. The version you upgraded from. If the CS5.5 installer cannot find CS4 already installed on your hard drive then it asks you to enter a valid CS4 serial number. That's the only step you're missing.
Have you tried signing in to your Adobe account? If you registered CS4, the serial number will be listed there. I just checked mine and it lists serial numbers going back to 2005.
