Adobe Bridge Quick Search

hey, guys. hope everyone is well. this is a topic that has really caused me alot of aggravation. the adobe bridge quick search tool (top right corner) will not allow me to perform a "windows desktop search: computer". let me rephrase, its performs the search however it always yields "no items" as the result. i actually requested help with this problem before and one user suggested i try relocating the cache to a different internal drive and doing so solved the problem that time BUT that isnt working this time. ive tried resetting bridge to its default settings but that doesnt work. i checked my pc settings to make sure windows desktop search is enabled and it is. i uninstalled and re-installed bridge and that didnt help. i also re-indexed my entire pc and that didnt help either. im just at a total loss. this is the most frustrating problem bcuz i used that quick search daily to find items by keyword and i can no longer do that unless i search folder by folder using the other drop down settings (Bridge Search: Current Folder & Windows Desktop Search: Current Folder). the quick search allowed me to search the entire pc by keyword and saved me alot of time. in case anyone is wondering, yes, the "FIND" tool in the EDIT menu works fine but again, i can only use that to search one location at a time whereas the quick search allowed me to search my entire pc with one click.

ive searched google endlessly and found that ALOT of users have the exact same issue with adobe bridge quick search and it seems no one has a definitive solution to this problem. does anyone have idea what could be causing this or how i can fix it? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Figured out what the issue is.

Bridge will only search a primary folder for files.

It ill not search a file structure like  c:\photos\march 2018 from the C: drive or from c:\photos

You have to do your search specifically in  the c:\photos\march 2018 sub folder.

And yes that seems insane.

The fix is to reinstall Bridge. Adobe staff have posted this a couple of times.

re-installing bridge does NOT resolve the problem. ive done this more times than i can count. this is a very common problem and adobe doesnt seem to want or know how to address it. it works fine for months and months and then for no reason at all it just stops. and i havent changed software or settings on my pc.

Finally figured out what is going on.

Search function can only be used to search for keywords associated with the files, not the file name its self.

The find function allows file name search but not hierarchy folder search.

This is not true. I am able to search for filename, keyword, or numerous other criteria on both my local drive and on a server. And subfolders work as long as they are indexed.

this is definitely NOT the case. the quick search can be used to search for keywords, filenames etc .. thats precisely why its so useful and its causing me so much aggravation not having it.

Hi,

maybe that's because of the Windows indexing of drives and files, I think. Bridge uses it for quick searches via Windows Desktop. There the search locations and search criteria are defined and this doesn't really seem to work properly or has to be set up specifically for it to work. I've tried to add locations/folders/drives and file types with the "Index file contents" option in the Windows control panel (Win 10) several times now, but this doesn't really work.

It seems to me that there is a bug on WIN 10 or some special settings must be made to solve the search problems in Bridge when using the Windows desktop quick search.

i dont think its a windows 10 specific issue bcuz its happened to me in the past using windows 7. i wish adobe would figure it out. it'd be different if it never worked but it works then stops working and i cant get it to work again. extremely frustrating.

its unbelievable that adobe offers ZERO support for bridge. poor customer service for sure. i wont spend another dollar on an adobe product.

Hi @Snake Doctor,

I tried the Quick Search on Bridge 8.0.1.282 over a Windows x64 machine and  I was able to search successfully using Bridge:Window desktop Search.

As mentioned in a reply by @Volkor Poth above, Bridge makes use of Windows Index to search the contents of the PC. If we don't have anything indexed in Windows, Bridge will not be able to find the files using Bridge:Window desktop Search.

Can you please confirm that the folders or drive which you want to search are included in the Windows search Index ?

Are you able to search the contents of the folder which you have opened in Bridge currently?

Windows 10 users need to go to "Indexing Options" in Control Panel.

Click Modify and add the drives or specific folders you want Windows to Index then hit OK.

You will notice the number of indexed items increases [From Microsoft: When you first run indexing, it can take up to a couple of hours to complete. After that, indexing will run in the background on your PC as you use it, only re-indexing updated data.]. I left my computer running overnight.

In Bridge, search field set to "Windows Desktop Search: Current Folder" started working for me after doing the above. It also searches in subfolders.

Searching for part of a file name is no issue in Bridge. The issue I'm having now is with Microsoft File Explorer, searching for a part of a word requires you to add an asterisk * before what you are searching for.

I've found Bridge search to be hit or miss, regardless of which search index I use. It frequently fails to return results for files that are in a specific folder.

Why even have the user choose? Bridge should spawn multiple threads to search both its own index(es) and the system index. Just return any results.
