Adobe Bridge single digit rating & skipping photos

Hi, I'm trying to use Bridge for my first time on a Windows laptop, but when press 1 it skips 1 photo and goes to photo number 3, if I go back to my first photo and press 2, it skips 2 photos and goes to number 4, however, I want it to apply a rating of 1 to the selected photo. I've edited the keyboard shortcut settings to allocate the rating (they seemed OK in the default) but there is no setting to skip x photos..? Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

The default kbsc to assign a rating is Ctrl+0 through Ctrl+5. A more basic, not really documented, kbsc involves navigation within a content panel. If you press A then the selection will be the first (or next) item in the panel that begins with the letter A. If you press 1, the selection will jump to the next item that begins with 1. In either case, if there is no filename that starts with that character, Bridge will find the filename in which it occurs closest to the beginning.

E.g.: In my Pictures folder, I have subfolders by year for my personal photos. If I press 1 on the keyboard, selection jumps to the 2010 folder, which is the first one with a 1 digit in the name.

From what I can tell, it's not possible to override this more basic function of a key. Ctrl+ or Alt+ would be the way to go. You can, however, assign different functions to the Numpad keys and the equivalent regular number keys. You just need to add a modifier key to make them work.

Thanks Alan. That seems to explain the skipping - going to the next file with that digit in its name. However, in Bridge on the keyboard mapping graphic, it shows that 1 (num) (presumably numerical keypad, Ctrl+1 and 1 (no modifier) are mapped to assigning a rating of one - there's no mention of either, especially 1 by itself, being allocated to skipping..? You're saying, and it seems to be the case, that in spite of Adobe having the numbers 0-5 mapped as ratings, their hidden default overrides this..? Crazy Adobe bug!!!

The quick indexing has been a feature of Bridge for decades. Keyboard shortcuts are new since the October 2022 version. So it's not a bug. It's just the way Bridge was designed to work and is a very fast way to navigate in some work scenarios.

I think you're misreading the keyboard map. It is more specific than you think. The numeric keys alone (no modifier) assign ratings in the Review Window and the Full Screen (Slideshow), not in the Content panel, where all the unmodified keys act as quick search keys.

The tooltip will give you the information if you hover over a key. Screen grab is from the Review Window section of the kbsc window. Notice how much information is given in the tooltip for the spacebar:

I think you will find it helpful to read carefully through the entire help section for the keyboard shortcuts UI. It is far deeper than it looks at first glance. It is also a new (to Bridge) feature, so it's early days.

Keep in mind that "It doesn't work the way I expect" and "It doesn't work" are not the same thing. In this case, why not post a Feature Request on adobebridge.uservoice.com so others can vote on it?
