Question

after batch renaming a list of files, they are now out of order

I am running Adobe Bridge version 14.0.1.137 on Windows 10 Enterprise

After batch renaming, in the same folder, a list of files sorted by file name,  starting with sequence number 1 with up to four digits, I am finding them out of order.  I have also tried the move to another folder option.

It's a simple task: I scan the pages of a book then batch rename the scanned pages, when I step thru the newly named files I come across pages that are now out of order.

For Example, after batch renaming pages 1 thru 15 I now see the pages appearing in the following order

                                                      1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 6, 7, 8, 9

AB does not do this consistently, it is a sporadic problem but it happens more times than not.

...and in what order do you have Bridge's sort order set to display files? By filename, by date created etc.

I always have the files sorted by file name before a batch rename because the scanner builds its filenames using a date and timestamp.  As I progress thru the book they are then in a natural order as I continue to scan each page.  Here is a sample of what they look like ...

pic_2023-12-21_122754_R  (this might be page 1 of a book)

pic_2023-12-21_123051_R  (this would then be page two)

Thanks!

Oops ... never mind, I just found  the drop down "sort by" menu in the top right corner of the screen!

Can you give examples of the file names?

Do you pad the sequence numbers with zeros?

001

002

003

I do not pad the starting sequence number with zeroes, I always start with the single digit 1

1st line of New Filenames: Text - author's last name suffixed with an underscore(_), Second line: Text - author's first initial suffixed with an underscore then the starting Sequence Number  is always the single digit 1 and I take the default of "four digits" for sequencing, see attachment.

Here is a sample of the file names that I rename ...

The scanner builds file type tif pic_  is just some text the scanner prefixes the file name with. The file name takes on a date and 24 hour time stamp as I proceed thru the book.  The R means that the scan is from the right side of the page.  I always sort the list of files by name ascending sequence before I perform a batch rename.

After batch rename finishes they look like this if the author's name is, for example,  John Smith.

Smith_J_0001

Smith_J_0002

Smith_J_0003

Thanks!

Using four digits for your sequence number is what I meant by "padding". The added 0's beofre the sequence number makes sorting more reliable, except it's not working correctly.

Is the problem is that your renamed files are displayed like this when sorted by filename?

Smith_J_0001.tif
Smith_J_0002.tif
Smith_J_0003.tif
Smith_J_0004.tif
Smith_J_0005.tif
Smith_J_0010.tif
Smith_J_0011.tif
Smith_J_0012.tif
Smith_J_0013.tif
Smith_J_0014.tif
Smith_J_0015.tif
Smith_J_0006.tif
Smith_J_0007.tif
Smith_J_0008.tif
Smith_J_0009.tif

Or is the problem that the numbers (e.g., 0006) do not match the page numbers in the book (e.g., page 6)?
