Bridge Performance is EVEN WORSE

I didn't think it possible, but Bridge 12.0.0.234 performance is even worse than previous versions.  Opening the same folder I've opened multiple times before, without restarting the computer, Bridge takes over 30 seconds to respond to anything.  Clicking anywhere on Bridge results in a whited out screen and Windows saying Bridge is Not Responding.  It takes over a minute to Generate Thumbniails in a folder with 1414 raw files - every time I open Bridge - the same folder I've been working in for days.

 

All the new ACR masking features are wonderful.  But not if it takes 30+ seconds just for Bridge to get around to opening a file.

 

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - ditch watever DB you're using.  Hire a SQL performance expert.  Fix Bridge performance.  I know it's possible.  I've personally seen massave DB's with millions of complex elements run smoothly, seamlessly, and responsively on a 7 year old PC.

Let me start by saying that there are some differences between what you're seeing and what I'm seeing. Also, I'm on a Mac, not Windows. 

 

I have to say that I've been using Bridge since it first came out and I've never seen Bridge build thumbnails as fast as it is now. Period, end of report.

 

Obviously there must be some differences in either our setup or something else is buggering up the road.

 

So let's start out by clearing the cache fo the folder you're using. Please do the one your in, and if that helps, do the rest.

Next, do your Preview Options match mine?

And lastly, how many images are in this folder of yours? Hundreds? Thousands? Tens-of-thousands?

Hardly.  My configuration is exactly as stated by gary_sc.  I have an I7-6800K, 48GB memory, a Western Digital Black 4TB drive with 1.7TB free, nothing else running, and Bridge still takes almost 20 seconds to display thumbnails in the content window in a folder with 394 psd files.  And it only has finished the images in the content window at that time.  When I scroll down, it starts again and takes another forever to display the next set.

 

I've rinstalled Bridge, cleared the entire cache (which is on a dedicated SSD drive with 46% free space)...  nothing helps.  I also moved an entire folder with 2.6K files, a mixture of dng and psd files, to a separate dedicated SSD and performance didn't improve.

 

Clearly, someting is going on and based on everything I've tried, it doesn't appear to be my PC.

I have used Bridge for years and was on the PR team for a while, Bridge HAS improved performance greatly. Unfortunately it still has bugs and works sporadically for some people. You might see if its a conflict with other software (anti-virus or cloud syncing.)

Thanks for the tips.  There are no other apps running (except PS) when I experiece very sloooow Bridge performance.  I looked into my anti-virus (Bitdefender).  It doesn't report anything regarding Adobe products, but I temporarily disabled it and tried Bridge.  Unfortunately, no change.

RE:  "says it all"...is intended to imply that Adobe has no intent to acknowledge and resolve the reported problem.  Adobe simply denies that it exists.

 

 Today, I reverted back to Adobe Bridge 11.  Performance is back to acceptable.  It does, still, back out my 2nd monitor when I toggle the preview pane to full screen.

Just to chime in: Bridge is a mess - on a Mac. I have a Mac Pro 12-core tower, no speciel setups or hardware, latest updates - and performance is subpar. In addition, it hangs, if left open for more than a few hours.

Hello... so I have also been experiencing some pretty substantial slowness in Bridge that "seemed" to get worse as the newer versions released, but has existed for what seems to be the last 3-4 versions. I'm on the current 2022 version on two systems, a xps 15 laptop with windows 11 and custom built PC with windows 10 pro. Both were seeing this horrible slowness in Bridge and it was to the point that I was researching other options. But I couldn't find anything that could do what Bridge can do with ACR and photoshop integrations, etc. I could go on and on about that road, but I'll come back to how I ended up fixing my speed issue. This post (https://community.adobe.com/t5/bridge-discussions/why-is-bridge-cc-so-slow/td-p/5755175) helped me to ultimatly discover what was causing my Bridge slowness. It without a doubt came down to on both systems have mapped network drives to a local server and a web server that I VPN into. Some of them aren't always connected, but still show up in windows as a disconnected drive. As soon as I removed all the mapped network drives that weren't connected, Bridge instantly performed like lightening!! It was incredible. So, my guess is that on both windows or mac, if some sort of drive is connected, but not linked... maybe even to the point of a dropbox connection, or similar, that may be causeing Bridge to crawl. Mine was litterly taking 20-30 seconds to open a directory with 1 or 2 small web sized jpgs in it. I could open a folder, click to another and clicking back into a folder would lag on loading. If I batch renamed files and clicked refresh, it would take 10, 20, sometimes even up to a minute for the files to show again. Both systems are now like lightening in Bridge and I couldn't be happier. Just wanted to share my discovery and hope it helps someone else. I'm now on to seeing alternative ways to connect to other computers on the network... but for now, I'm absolutely thrilled that Bridge is fast!

Thanks for the tip.  All of my drives are local - directly connected via SATA cables.  I did have an old Dropbox folder from when I used it years ago.  I don't have the app.  I deleted the folder and restarted.  Unfortunately, didn't help.

In Bridge preferences, what are your moitor preview settings under the advanced tab?

Has anyone tried changing their  monitor settings to see if it has any effect?

Software rendering vs. monitor size previews vs. nothing selected?

Advanced Tab:

"Use Software Rendering"  Off

"Generate Monitor Size Previews"  Off

"Start Bridge at Login" Off

 

Cache Tab:

"Keep 100% Preiviews in cache" Off

"Compact cache on exit" On

"Automatically import cache from folders..." On

"Purge cache older than 180 days..." On

 

Dropdown "Options for thumbnail quality and preview generation":

Preview Size: Embedded (Fastest)

Preview Quality: Standard (Recommended)

Preview Generation: Always Generate (Recommended)  (Note:  I've turned this off and it made no difference)

 

Button "Browse quickly by preferring embedded images": On

 

I've tried everything I can find to speed things up.  Nothing works (so far).

Actually, I have a desktop.

ASUS X99-E MB

I-7 6800K (not overclocked)

48 GB DDR4 3200 memory

NVIDIA 3070 FE graphics card (not overclocked)

Mixture of Western Digital Black and SSD drives.  None are over 60% used.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit

New, potentially interesting info...  I have a dedicated SSD drive for Bridge cache.  Bridge cache size is set to 178 GB.  I've been using this configuration for months - many folders and many thousands of files.  Yet, that drive has less that 1 GB used.  ???

Actually that's a great Motherboard.

Check your memory allocation and see if you can span what windows uses for virtual memory over several drives.

I would also throttle down Windows OS use of graphic; lipstick and make it more performance driven.

I have also deleted all energy management services in the windows system settings. Including USP devices, and Windows services controls.

This VERY important especially if you are running applications on a Laptop.

On my Dell XPS there were over 20 energy management settings I had to delete.

 

It does make a difference.
