Question

Bridge workflow Changing the file size when it change format

Im trying to create a set of workflows for common tasks my department does regularly like converting pdfs to jps and resizing/renaming. I'd love to set it to one buttone do all. but right now im stuck on the change format stage. i removed all other steps and just set 1 change format move. I set it to make a jpg and to save it in a Deposite folder on my desktop. I put a pdf I made on my server into the workflow and hit start. it deposites a jpg in the desired folder but the size is been changes considerably smaller. Why? I need this step to stay at original pixle dimentions before I can trust to start adding rename and resize steps. oddly just to see what would happen I used photoshop to save it as a JPG. then brought it back in to check its size and it kept its dimentions as i would expect it to.

Any advice?

When converting a document into a photographic image, are you taking into consideration of resolution?

That is, an image that is "x" pixels wide will be completely different pixel sizes if saved at 100, 200, 300, or 400 ppi, but will all "print" to the same size if they are set to print to the proper resolution.

BTW, if these documents are mostly text, you are better off to save as png format as they will have no degradation.

One of these screenshots is a jpg one is a png. You can see the difference.

Hi Gary, thanks. yes I keep them set to 300ppi. these are being saved as lower copies for web for another Department. So they get to request how the file type they want. my original pdf is 300ppi. and the short side is 750. but i want it to resize to new sizes like 200 short side at 300ppi. this should work this way but even with the output set to 200 with 300 ppi the file after output when i pull it into photoshop is smaller than 200 on the short side. it only does this with the conversion pdf to jpg. not when I do any jpg to jpg resize. I even put a jpg into the workflow telling it to convert to jpg to see if it would have the same error but it didnt.

Hi Todd,

Am I correct in assuming that when you say "…and the short side is 750. but I want it to resize to new sizes like 200 short sides…; the number that you're referring to as the short side is the width in pixels?

If so, 200 doesn't seem right.  At 300 ppi, that means that the page will be about 2/3 of an inch across. At 300 ppi, an 8.5˝ page is 2550 pixels wide.

However, what you are not identifying is whether folks are viewing the documents on a monitor OR printing them out. They will print out at 8.5 x 11 at any resolution, but the lower the resolution the more pixelated the text will be.

BTW, you may want to show the difference between JPG versus PNG to them and give them the option. You can take credit if they like the difference! :>)
