this morning photoshop started with the start your 30 day free trial popup. I checked the CC app and sure enough photoshop and bridge were waiting to be installed (despite being installed and having been installed for months).
If I install them at this point will I lose my presets, actions etc. I already lost my tool presets in an upgrade, I dont want to lose anything else

check your account to verify your subscription is what you expect and to verify your adobe id, https://www.adobe.com/account.html
then if your account shows what you expect,
1. sign out and then back in to your cc desktop application using the same adobe id used to pay for your subscription: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/sign-in-out-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html
2. if that fails, Stop Creative Cloud from reverting to trial mode

when your trial expires you won't be able to continue using the subscription programs.

Well I installed the 2017 release with bridge, and yet all my file associations are still pointing to bridge 2015. (ie if I double click a raw file it opens bridge 2015. Why would you just not replace the previous install? WHy does this always happen.
And before anyone says: I'm talking about file associations in the OS, not which files within bridge open what adobe program. I've been banging on about this for since bridge 2. I have many files set to open in bridge, including psds, tiffs, ai files blah blah blah. When a new version of brodge is installed it should inherit these associations. COME ON adobe, its pathetic

file associations are set by the os, which you seem to know, so change your os file associations.
google: <your os> change file associations

Getho, in addition to Kglad's suggestions, I would recommend reviewing https://adobe--c.na20.visual.force.com/apex/Km_ArticleDetail?uri=bridge/using/view-files-bridge.html... which discusses utilizing Adobe Bridge to override the OS settings for file associations.
If you continue to experience difficulties then solution 1 in File associations broken | Uninstall Adobe Creative Suite applications | Windows discusses how to manually adjust the file associations within the OS.

Must * try * to * avoid * sarcasm.
Would it kill adobe to install the new version with the old file associations? THis is yet another of those small fiddly niggly things that adobe makes you do. It used to be common, in 2017 adobe software is alone out of all the software I use in having usability this poor.
I spend a lot of time farting around with adobe software rather than creating with it. I was a huge photoshop fanboy; say the word Adobe and I'd get the fizz. Now its synonymous with slowness, bugs, and drudgery. Its moved to the place in my head that used to be occupied by microsoft
