Hello,
I can see this issue has plagued Bridge across many versions for many years. How can it be so troublesome to literally just apply a star rating to a media file?!
I've tried the purge thing. I've tried Stable and Beta versions of Bridge. I've tried changing the keyboard shortcut.
The only way to get keyboard shortcuts for ratings to work is to first pick a rating using the mouse. Only then will keyboard shortcuts work MAYBE - and only on that specific file. Soon as I switch away from Bridge for a sec and return to it - shortcuts for ratings stop working again and I have to use the mouse.
Really, really, really annoying and getting in the way of me doing my work.

Hi, @lflegg, To make things better, they made things more complicated than it used to be for this one feature. In the past, it was just one click in the Preferences that let you switch from needed the Command/Control key plus the number key or just the number key. Now you need to set that for each number. Yeah a bit (or a lot) of pain.
Some people had issues trying to figure this out, so I made a video explaining it. One correction: in the video, I state that the Keyboard Shortcuts were the 2nd from the bottom of the Edit menu. Actually they are the third from the bottom.
Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0PO-rnn0uE&t=12s
Let me know if this solves the problem.

thanks - nope that was the first thing I checked. I've tried changing them all to numbers just to test but no difference.
Tech support guy said he was flummoxed and maybe something to do with how Bridge packages and sends metadata editing requests to the video files/ some kind of buffer overload bug
Yeah - crazy annoying and dumb how much harder they've made it to switch to removing modifier key from rating shortcuts. Having to do them all manually Whyyy

I'm on latest Win11, tried Current + Previous Stable versions and Beta. All have same issue.
Just spent over an hour with tech support getting this escalated and referring to this (and similar) threads.
For me - I can always rate with mouse. With keyboard, it's extremely intermittent - doesn't work about 80% of the time. Most often it works immediately after I've rated with mouse I'll usually be able to change rating with keyboard shortcuts. Tech support guy was unable to help but said they've fully escalated it for investigation. I'm working with video files, not photos. I don't think I've had this issue as much, if at all, with photos.

Hi @lflegg ,
Thanks for your feedback.
To better investigate the issue, could you please share the following:
We might reach out to you to get more information but to start with, it would be helpful if you could give more details about the issue along with the asked details.
Thanks,
Bridge Team

I posted this in one of your other threads about this issue and never heard back from you:
IFlegg, check something for me please. When you are attempting to add ratings to a selected media file with a KBSC and it fails, does your mouse cursor happen to be hovering over the video thumbnail at the time? Does it still fail when you move the mouse cursor off the media thumbnail and try the same KBSC?

This is the most insufferable issue I have with any Adobe application. It's plagued me for years and I pray with each new release of Bridge it'll be resolved. I've tried every suggestion imaginable over the years and NOTHING works. As you mentioned, something as simple as applying a rating shouldn't be so unreliable. I hate to think how much time it's robbed me of over the years.

The Custom Keyboard is simple to you ONCE you've grocked it. I made a video that shows the basics for setting ratings and labels. Let me know if this helps you or not. If you have any subsequent questions, please ask.

I just finished a project where I rated and then unrated more than 13,000 image files. I am using Bridge 2022, not 2024, but mouse, keyboard shortcut, and my own Label Bar script all worked perfectly (other than Bridge with its usual crashing routine.)
