In Bridge, does changing an 'AI' extension to 'AIT' make the file into an Illustrator template?

I did so and when double clicking the file it opened in Illustrator as 'untitled'.

Would it retain the functionality with Illustrator upgrades?

Does this method work with other applications?

I'm looking for the certainty of this. I don't want to lock myself out of my own files.

This has nothing to do with Bridge. Some Adobe apps have template files, you may want to check on the Illustrator forum for any gotchas.

.ait files are discussed here:
