Problem = Bridge 2022 Photo Downloader stalls (freezes)

I'm using MacOS Catalina on a 2014 iMac 27 and trying to download images from an iPhone 13 Pro. I have checked "Preferences/When camaera is connected..." With phone plugged in, the Photo Downloader window opens (I see Get Photos from: etc.) then this pop-up appears "Loading device list... Please wait." Then it locks up and I have to do a Force Quit. 

Is there a fix??
