We are running the new CS Web Premium 4 on MacOS 10.4.11. In Bridge, sometimes the CR2 Raw file does not show a preview thumbnail. It only appears with a thumbnail that reads RAW. If you launch it in Photoshop and make a minor correction, when you hit Done, the thumbnail preview appears in Bridge. Please advise how to fix this so that we can view all Raw thumbnail previews.

Jim,
It would be so much easier to help you if you provided exact details…

What exact version of Photoshop? Did you apply the Photoshop 11.0.1 update?
What exact version of ACR (the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in)?

Each Canon (or Nikon, or whatever) camera model generates a different raw file format. What exact model of camera are you talking about here? Did you check to see whether that model is supported in ACR yet?
Have you Purged the Cache through the Tools menu in Bridge for each folder?
Are you set to a central cache in Bridge (sheer lunacy) or are you set to Distributed Folders ("Export cache to folders when possible")(preferred)?

Well, I'm not Jim, but I do thank you for your instructions, as they solved my thumbnail preview problem for Canon 50d .CR2 files in Bridge CS4! The screen capture really helped.

You're welcome. Don't forget to keep Camera Raw updated. The current version for CS4 is ACR 5.3 or, for those with cameras not supported by ACR 5.3, there's ACR 5.4 Release Candidate (sort of a like an advanced beta).
ACR updates often or usually contain unannounced enhancements and bug fixes, beside support for newer camera models.

Hello,
I am in the same boat here, I'm on the newest version of Mac (10.5.6)....
I'm working with CS4 I too can not see the previews in Bridge, I read your posting and I changed the settings in Bridge preferences...
Still am not having any luck! I'm shooting with the new 5D markII and working on a newer MacBook.
I would appericate any help you have to offer!
Thanks!

Nope. The current version of the OS is 10.5.7.

Well, that alone isn't going to do anything for you.
You need to relaunch Bridge and then you need to Purge the Cache for the offending folder(s) through the Tools menu in Bridge.
Make sure you have updated to ACR 5.3. The version of the Camera Raw plug-in installed by CS4 does not support your camera.
Make sure to folloe the directions for updating Camera Raw (ACR) to the letter, following the correct path and replacing the obsolete Camera Raw plug-in in that location:

If you still have problems after updating to ACR 5.3, relaunching Bridge, and Purging the Cache, then try trashing/resetting your Bridge Preferences by holding down the Option key as you relaunch Bridge once again.

Hi,
After I initially changed the settings in Bridge preferences, in accordance with the Ramon's screen capture, I, too, could still NOT see the thumbnails. Then, I did two other things that he also directed...which made the thumbs pop up!
First, I opened Bridge and under "help" chose "Check for Updates," which downloaded a whole gob of patches (about 430 MB worth..for a bunch of the Creative Suite components...may not be as many if you have not installed the whole suite)...including Camera Raw 5.3.
Once those patches were installed, I opened Bridge, selected a pics folder in the Bridge Folders tab, then went to "TOOLS" (pull down menu), and selected "Purge Cache for NameofPicsFolder" from the flyout. Then the thumbs showed up. Evidently, the cache _for each folder_needs to be rebuilt in order to generate the thumbnails. This was news to me, as I had never had to do this with any previous version or Adobe software...except way back for Dreamweaver 8.
Anyway, hope that works for you. I had a brand new Macbook Pro with 10.5.7 on it and nothing else, so I was pretty sure it was something I had done incorrectly, rather than the hardware.
One other point: I know that Camera Raw 5.3 did update for 2 additional cameras, one a Nikon and the other???? But, didn't Canon already cover the 5D MarkII in an earlier camera raw update? Like 5.2??? So, the problem is not that Camera Raw has not been updated for your camera...I'm almost positive it has.
Anyway, hope this helps. Thank goodness for Ramon!
Regards,
Dana Beck

Thank you for the undeserved kind words.
The reason why I remommend always updating to the latest release of the ACR plug-in is that each release usually contains unannounced bug fixes and unheralded enhancements and/or improvements.

sorry to jump in here - but this thread is the most hope i have seen in 6 months of having this issue.
- i have tried all of the above steps... verified i have the latest camera raw (about a month ago i installed manually according to adobe website instructions)...
- installed photoshop element's six... which funny enough installs bridge 3.... which works FINE for thumbnails!
- what recourse do we have if we have already trusted adobe and used the purge all button in the preferences cache area?
- to recap
10.5.8
bridge v 3.0.0.464
latest camera raw - jun 4th 09
no updates avail for bridge 4
works fine in bridge 3
tried purge individual folder
tried option open, reset prefs and the other two checks as well
lastly i tried copying the raw plugin from cs4 to desktop and then the cs3 plugin into the cs4 folder..
reopened bridge 4
and repurged that folder - no change
(put the raw file back where it belonged)

thanks in advance

purge all button in the preferences cache area?
If you already have used the option to delete central cache then you have
not much folders cached and no need for that I assume?
In that case quit Bridge and go to the user library. In here trace the cache
folder: Caches / Adobe / Bridge CS4 / Cache Grab this folder and drag it
manual to the trash (or if you are not sure just place it somewhere outside
the library folder to use it as a back-up that you can replace if it does
not help you)
Also in the user library go to the preferences folder and delete the plist
file for Bridge (' com.adobe.bridge3.plist') manual to the trash.
Both cache and plist file will refresh itself with a new file after
restarting Bridge.
Again start Bridge holding down option key and choose refresh preferences.
Reset the preferences and workspace to your wishes and try again.
Double check on the ACR plugin according to the screenshot Ramón gave in a
previous post in this thread and it should be on the root level and version
5.4
In PS go to Photoshop Menu and choose about plugins - Camera Raw plug in,
check if there is only one version and if it is 5.4

in reply to dikabola121 - what i mean is that i have done a check update and it report none avail for bridge cs4
last night i attempted install over of ps, bridge, and acrobat (no uninstall) just to see if it would maybe fill in some missing files or whatever (cause i am getting that 're-enable disabled components error on acrobat update... and of course even though it says to check adobe website there is NADA there about re-enabling disabled components...)
then did a check updates and only had the 1 for acrobat come up..
in reply to omke - thanks very much
have moved cache folder to desktop
deleted pref file for bridge 4 - com.adobe.bridge3.plist
(just noticed that the version # for cs4 bridge is v3... very strange)
about plug in (thanks for showing me this)
ver 5.4.0.57
only 1 camera raw is listed
restarted bridge 4 - w/ the reset options..
unfortunately, still no thumbs - just the cr2 placeholder.   its so strange that it works fine in bridge 3 but not bridge 4..
tried to purge 1 folder via tools - no change
(i even tried yesterday before posting to view a few folders in bridge 3 and then view same in bridge 4 hoping bridge 3 would build the thumbs.. but i see now they have separate caches so that which didnt work was indeed futile)
then
attempted check for updates again (none but acrobat showed yesterday evening - now it says bridge was moved (not the case) and wants to repair - so did so and the update started - but none for bridge -- all completed fine except acrobat (another separate issue since i used the monolingual app to remove extra foriegn languages...)
service update and output module, flash lite 3.1 all installed fine
ran version cue from sys prefs -- check updates - and it STILL finds those 3 updates... odd cuase it just stated it installed them fine... checked all but acrobat update and re-attempted update install (what a pain in the butt that it requires it to download it EACH time -- i do not have fast internet connection)
it says the update completed ok (same as before)
thanks for your help

(just noticed that the version # for cs4 bridge is v3... very strange)
not that strange, Photoshop CS (1) came with the filebrowser, CS2 provided a new version of the filebrowser they start to call Bridge (so that was version 1 for Bridge in version 2 for PSCS )
 )
its so strange that it works fine in bridge 3 but not bridge 4..
It is indeed
(i even tried yesterday before posting to view a few folders in bridge 3 and then view same in bridge 4 hoping bridge 3 would build the thumbs.. but i see now they have separate caches so that which didnt work was indeed futile)
Well, at least it shows that the files are OK and it is Bridge CS4 that is not...
now it says bridge was moved (not the case) and wants to repair - so did so
That sounds like trouble. You have made sure you have Bridge CS4 installed in the application folder? Also if you start from the dock throw away the current alias for Bridge and drag a new one straight from the root level applicationfolder Bridge application (select the application icon itself in the Bridge folder) and drag it to the Dock.
Also again restart with option key to refresh preferences.
Also do a system check using Apple Disk Utility (it is in the Utility folder inside the application folder) and choose check and repair disk permissions.
If this is not helping I have to admitt that I start running out of options and you should consider to use an application like Disk Warrior to check and rebuild the directory of your start up disk or you could open a case at tech support from Adobe using the contact button on top of the forum site.
hope this helps

hmm coincidentally i did a full repair permissions using onyx yesterday --- cause i did the 10.5.8 update and knowing it was a big update wanted to insure success..
the moved error did not re-appear after clicking the repair button from adobe.
opened from the actual directory - no errors .... omg now it works!!!
i replaced the alias i was using at your suggestion for future use
ok i have no idea which item fixed it - but thanks so much ! (i did test after each logicial series of steps... ah well)
thanks again

ok - so after another update failure i was updating iphoto and saw some posts about updates failing for that becuase the app had been moved... and i thought hmm... i had moved all my adobe apps to a sub folder in apps - cause frankly adobe's install is a bloody mess.. and i did this before i knew what alias were.. so i moved it all back.. but that wasnt good enough -- so i reinstalled... (cuase once again my thumbs were broken)... and still no thumbs... so a little searching and i see i have two of the bridge app icons... ok... so i get rid of the previous one... re-create the dock alias again... and voila - thumbs...
so it seems that - at least for me - this was caused by the app being moved... once its all back where adobe expects things it works fine... as does the big update and future ones. (still testing that last service update - re-doing after finding that 1 extra bridge app and having removed it).. sigh that worked and now there are 3 more... (will they ever end lol)...
hope this helps people..
if adobe is reading this -- i would be REALLY nice if they made cleaner install... like either EVERYTHING in one adobe folder in apps -- or all the supporting files somewhere other than my apps directory - and just the main apps in the actual apps directory...
again - thanks for pointing me in the alias direction - that was what made me connect the dots to the moved apps from the other apple apps issues...
