Star Rating not working

Hello All

Adobe Bridge CC 2017 running on Win10

I have been reviewing images and the Star Rating shortcuts have stopped working (ctr+1 thru ctrl+5). The labels still work (ctr+6 thru ctrl+9). I can place a start rating on an image from the menu bar, but that is a pain in the butt when reviewing hundreds of images. The ctrl+1 shortcut was working up until a week or so ago. Any ideas on whats wrong? There may have been a "fat finger" along the way but I sure could not e4xpand on that.

Is there a simple way to get this working again?

Thank you

John Munro

Hi Labjohn,

You can try purging the cache by doing the following:

  • Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Bridge > Preferences (Mac OS).
  • Select the Cache panel.
  • Click Purge Cache.

Sahil

UDPATE:

Spent an hour on the phone to a BRIDGE specialist and got this working.

The issue for me had something to do with the CAMERA RAW PLUGIN. She screen shared with me, deleted the RAW plugin, then reinstalled it, then quite BRIDGE and reopened it, and it worked.

Good luck to all. Hope this helps.

Purging did not work for me. It hasn't been working for months. I'm a fashion art director who trolls through thousands of images weekly. Rating is an essential part of my job. Can someone please sort this mess the F out?

I was having the same problem and found that by going to the 'View' and clicking 'Sort' then, changing it to by 'filename' , I was then able to choose a star rating.

Star ratings are not working in Adobe Bridge 9.0.1, 2018. I've done all the purges and restart safe routines, nothing helps. I'm dead in the water with several hundred images to rate and I can't. Bridge 8.1 worked OK most of the time but it was flaky as well. Nothing like this. I can't un-rate an image and many images just sit there with no apparent action at all.

Hi chaynes4_me_com,

Please try to reset the preferences by holding ctrl+click on Bridge Icon for windows and opt+click for iMac.

1. Try to change the rating via Label -> Rating menu

or

2. Try to use ctrl+(1 to 5 ) for windows and cmd+(1 to 5 ) for iMac.

or

3. Open preferences (ctrl+k or cmd+k) go to Labels uncheck require control keys to Apply Rating and Labels.

Click ok and then try rating them using numbers (1 to 5).

If none of these options works for you please ensure that files are not locked and Adobe Bridge have the proper permission to the file.

Also please share more info like

1. File format

2. Drive on which files are located (network, local or any external hard drive).

3. Operating system configuration.

Thanks,

Avinash

Greetings,

Thanks for the response.

I started by resetting the preferences in Bridge. I then went to the folders that house my photographic files and changed permissions on all to “read and write.”

Here is the way the window looks. Some of the files are JPG some are PSD as you can see.

The blank ratings areas are not responding to Command (Number) whatever is checked in preferences.

Mac OS 10.14.1. iMac. Bridge 9.0.1

Thanks. C

I am having a similar problem - with a very different set of circumstances, I can't apply rating or labels - but only in one folder. This particular folder only has 29 images, so I don't think that it's a cache memory issue. I tried to use the commands in a previous folder (containing 183 images) - and the commands work fine, so the problem isn't with Bridge either. The problem is only happening inside this folder.

To recap: Ratings are either hiding or have been removed from image thumbnails that I have already rated. Labels on that I had previously applied are visible, but I cannot assign new labels or ratings. This problem is only happening in a single folder, the rating/label commands work fine in every other folder.

Any ideas?

Hi Troy,

Can you please confirm if the files in that particular folder are not read-only (Is there a lock icon visible on the top of the thumbnails) ? Also, Is Bridge  able to perform various other actions like adding a keyword or writing some other metadata?

Thanks,

Siddharth

Hi Siddarth,

I checked to make sure the images weren't locked via the Get Info command (Mac), and checked everything I could find in Bridge's file menus to see if I could find the problem, and found nothing. I had already started the selection process a day prior; the star ratings disappeared, but the assigned labels still showed. I went into preferences and looked through the metadata and other preferences to see if I could find a solution there, still nothing. When I open the File Info to review the copyright metadata that I had assigned prior, special characters (apostrophes, and the copyright "c") show as a black triangle with a question mark. I got an error if I modified the metadata at all, so no changes could be made.

So here is what I know: There was no file corruption during transfer, as the metadata and rating commands worked fine the day before. There is no apparent lock on any of the image files (either in Bridge or Mac "Get Info"). The problem still persists today and only with these files, all file commands work fine on newly imported images today. The problem is metadata related.

My workaround was to copy the images into the client's folder, open and re-save as PSD files, and can now continue with star/label ratings to finish the selection process. Murphy's law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"

Thanks,

~Troy

Hello John,

Not sure if you got the answer but I just figured it out. I was working on external hdd on nearly 2000 images. My computer and Bridge were struggling with such massive amount of data. Once I copied small amount directly onto my PC, the rating is working as normal. In my case it simply was just too much data and Bridge was struggling. I hope this helps.

the whole point of bridge is to be able to sort through photos and eliminate those you want to use easily. My normal shoots at events are 2k. I also can't assign any star ratings to photos. What a PITA.

Has anyone actually resolve the problem? This rating hasn't been working for me either. I used above suggestions and nothing. I have nearly 2000 images I have to narrow from and by menu bar this will take forever. The safe mode as you call doesn't work either. And I don't understand why in preferences, labels start from +6?? I also have constant problem with deleting images. I hope someone will answer those questions at last! Thank you

How about someone answering the question?

I got two possible solutions that did not work and then the issue was closed out. This is no way to treat someone who has asked for some assistance.

Can you please reboot the machine in safe boot.

Start in Safe Boot mode for Adobe products on Mac OS X

Perform the same workflow and share your results.

I started Win 10 in Safe Mode and launched Bridge. All of the labeling shortcuts work Ctrl+1 thru Ctrl+9 as well as Ctrl+0.

I exited Safe Mode and tried the safe in Bridge and Ctrl+1, +2, +3 do not work. All other shortcuts work.

Sahil

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I have purged the cache several times from the Tools pull down with no success. I did as you suggested from the Edit...Preferences pull down and I am still at the same situation, but Ctrl +1, +2, +3 still are not working and Ctrl +4, +5 and +0 are now working. Any further suggestions?

Thank you

John

Hi John,

Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.

Check if the issue persists.

Gautam
