Two windows open in Bridge Oct. 2022 update?

Community Beginner ,
Nov 01, 2022 Nov 01, 2022

Hi!! I use Bridge daily and always have had 2 - 4 Bridge windows open so that I could easily move files from folder to folder after viewing them. However with the new Bridge update there no longer exists the "File, New Window" option.  After several hours, ok a few days...., of toying around and looking through discussion boards I couldn't find any information. Does anyone know how to have more than one Bridge window open with the new update? Thanks in advance.

Hi @Melani Lust just so you know. You CAN do that in the new Bridge. But rather than having multiple windows open, you do that with Multiple Content Panels open.

I do not know if you've ever placed the content of one image into another image in Photoshop, but the approach is the same. First, you need two Content Panels open. There are many ways to do this. If you see a plus (+) in the Content Panel, clicking that will open a new Content Panel, but it will default to a default location. From he

I believe the secret is in the Undock command. It alows you to resize and move your content pane to where you want it. With two content panes open, you have the functionality that you had before. Hope this helps.

This update really annoyed me as on occasion I would be doing some file naming and I might need to have two edited versions of the same images open in different windows.  Sometimes the file naming got messed up, so being able to switch back and forth between windows with a keyboard shortcut meant I could quickly see images that were in the wrong place before renaming again to fix whatever mistake I had made.

What smart person and Adobe hierarchy decided that we little dweebs pay for this should not be able to have more than one window open and thought we needed this? This is absolutely stupid I use more than one window all the time like I used two screens on my computer! fix this!!!!!!!!!!

I share your frustration. I'm going back to the one before this update. I work at Disney and we need to manage huge amounts of files by visually seeing them (the previews), and then grabbing and pulling multiple files into different folders. It has to be intuitive and quick. The 2023 update pretty much defeats that.

Absolutely. Another thing I’ve noticed, is that with the multiple content tab options, which some of the community experts mention, you can only open a certain amount of content tabs at a time….it is not unlimited, as I found out to my frustration. Basically, this has slowed everybody’s work slow down, instead of speeding it up. I appreciate that Adobe are trying to improve things, but they haven’t consulted with people who use daily workflows in this way.
By all means keep the content tab options, but please, please reinstate the multiple window option as well.

HI @Just as seen I'm curious by what you said. Typically I can get by with one Content Tab and may use up to three. On an experiment one time, I had 10 open. I did not notice any lag (only a very cluttered window).

What kind of files were you looking at, and how big were they? What is your OS, and how old is your system? How much RAM do you have?

I'm asking all this so I can get a better understanding of the potential limitations of Bridge. Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hi Gary,

I’m running W10 with 32GB Ram and dual (large) monitors. Processor is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4930K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.
It's around 7 or 8 years old but still works ok. I also have a MacBook with the latest OS.
I’m a photographer. I use Lightroom for batch processing and PS for more complex image work, but Bridge is still a practical viewing space for certain jobs, not all. I use Photo Mechanic for initial preview selection when we have several thousand images to preview as it is the fastest browser.
In the latest Bridge 13.0.0.562 I can only open 7 content tabs at any one time - after that it says maximum tabs opened, so even that is flawed. It is simply not intuitive.
When time is an issue, and it is for many of us, then this revamp is a backwards step.
Please pass on these forum comments to the Core Bridge Team, particularly Seetha Narayanan who seems to have been the first name on the team for ever!

Another issue, unrelated to this exact post is that I am unable to access the forum other than via this reply email. Is it broken? When I try to sign in, it keeps looping back to sign in page. My sign in details are correct!

Hi @Just as seen Look, I do not work for Adobe; I'm just a volunteer like just about everyone here. But, just so you know, Adobe IS looking at all of these messages (and, as we both know, there are a LOT. I also know that Adobe is working VERY hard on a multi-tiered repair of Bridge, hitting the worst bugs first followed by really annoying bugs, etc. It WILL happen, just do not know when. (Adobe is very good at keeping that kind of thing hidden.)

I'm very sorry, I do not have any clue about accessing the forums. I hate to say this, but I think your best bet is to contact Adobe on that. I wish you good luck.

Best,

Gary

Could this be more annoying???? I have multiple windows open in Bridge because I manage multiple shoots at various stages of processing, or many views from the same shoot on different screens. C'mon Adobe- why would you not ask users if this is OK before changing it?!?! I knew I'd find answers at the support community though! Does anyone know how to upload their "opinion" to get Adobe's attention and request File - new Window be re-instated?

Thank you for all the examples that will help make a case for multiple windows workflows that can't be met with multiple tabs. Please keep adding how it is necessary for you! The more examples, the more pressure to reinstate that function!

Adobe can you please fix this problem! We need multiple windows, not tabs for our workflow. This 2023 update kills everything we are doing on a daily basis. Uninstalling Adobe Bridge 2023 and going back to the 2022 so we can work.

Yes, this is a hideous update!  Thank heavens I can roll back to Bridge 2022 that supports the simple, obvious workflow of having 2 or 3 separate Bridge windows open simultaneously, and switching between them. Are Adobe designers somehow unfamiliar with drag & drop to move files between folders, looking at previews simultaneously in 2 folders, or comparing keyword searches side-by-side?

What a STUPID update. Of course we all use multiple windows! We are professionals that juggle multiple projects and often work on more than one monitor. Tabs are completely USELESS. We need new WINDOWS. We are visual creators and tabs do not work for us. Why on earth would you take away that feature?? GRRRR.   It is completely disruptive to change our workflow!
BRING BACK 'NEW WINDOW'.

I agree with you Bobbie and all others who say the new tab feature is a horrible REPLACEMENT for multipe windows. Mutiple windows with multipe tabs would be an UPDATE. But taking away multiple windows is absolutely a regression, NOT an update.

In fact, I'm astounded that Adobe, a "designer's" platform, wouldn't see this. I'm perplexed that we should even have to explain how this is a bad idea. Totally ruins my workflow and I want the older version back. Or update immediately (and they love this new tab thing, then enable new windows with tabs). Honestly, I'm perplexed that they didn't beta test with with any of the design community. NO ONE would have said "yeah, take away multiple windows, what a great idea!" No one. Ever.

As professionals, we often have assets on several drives, some on the local drive, some on Dropbox, some on an external drive. You cannot easily move from one to the other unless you have mulitple WINDOWS open. Tabs are a terrible idea.

100% Agree with you Jenny - it is quite extraordinary that Adobe push ahead with this without trialling it with professionals from all areas. Let's hope someone from Adobe can issue a quick patch to update this regressive step.

There are a lot of welcome updates with the new version of Bridge 2023, overall I really like it! The modular design is one thing that's been really well thought through.

However, the removal of support for multiple windows is an absolute deal-breaker. I use bridge across multiple monitors, and frequently have multiple rojects open at the same time in different windows and different Mission control desktop. Now I can only have Bridge open on one monitor and one desktop?? This is making it impossible for me to work productively in Bridge, and I'm going to have to revert to Bridge 2022 until this is fixed.

I guess Adobe's "innovations" won't ever stop surprising us. We need this software so we could be efficient in our work. And this software really needs to be improved and updated. But not like that. Please bring back multiple windows, for god's sake!

They need to bring back the multiple window function asap. The tabs function has really disrupted my workflow. I'm quite suprised why they would need to change this.

Hi, I guess, looking at how similar the interface behaves/looks, that they used the more modern Video Applications interface framework, that has the blue highlight, support tabbed interface, works on Applke Silicon, but, halas, on one window.

I hope that it will be possible to update it to support this needed functionality!

While Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator all support multiple windows.

I can't believe that nobody in the PR said anything about getting rid of multiple windows. One of the reasons I quit that, nobody wanted to listen to what a real professional user had to say. :sigh:

I **SO** feel your pain, Melani. What was once a split-second process - opening a second window - is now a useless convolution of inanity. Imho, Adobe programmers are almost always masters of the universe. So, pretty sure they will revert to FILE > NEW WINDOW by the next update. ONWARD!

I also just uninstalled the most recent version because have multiple windows open up at once was critical to my workflow. So frustrating!
