What is a curb and gutter?

New Here ,
Oct 27, 2021 Oct 27, 2021
Curb and gutters are concrete or asphalt structures used to collect surface runoff from paved streets, parking lots, or other impervious surfaces and convey it to a storm drain system or appropriate treatment and/or infiltration system. ... Wherever possible, eliminate or minimize curb and gutter systems.
Curb is a short wall installed to hold the pavement from the sides and act as a barrier between yard and street. It is abutted with a gutter which is a flat concrete slab that drains out water away from the yard. Usually, curb and gutter are constructed together at a site.
A street gutter is a depression that runs parallel to a road and is designed to collect rainwater that flows along the street diverting it into a storm drain. A gutter alleviates water buildup on a street, allows pedestrians to pass without walking through puddles, and reduces the risk of hydroplaning by road vehicles.

ABS and PVC pipes are plastic pipes, but their colors can identify them. PVC pipes are usually white or gray in color, while ABS pipes are black. ABS pipes and PVC pipes differ in many ways, both have different properties, and the method of installing them is also different.

Installing ABS pipe is usually a one-step process, while installing PVC pipe requires two steps. This makes ABS pipes more labor efficient than PVC pipes and faster to install. Read this article to know the difference between ABS pipes and PVC pipes.

BPA Content

Although both are plastic pipes, the main difference between the two is the BPA content they contain. ABS pipe contains BPA (Bisphenol A), while PVC pipe does not.

BPA is used to harden plastics, but it is a chemical that increases the risk of cancer. BPA is harmful to human and animal health. Due to this, ABS pipes are not used for potable water supply lines. PVC pipes are safe for potable water supply lines.

However, the Food and Drug Administration has said in recent years that current levels of BPA found in food are safe.

Soundproof

ABS and PVC are usually distinguished by their colors. Ignoring their colors, PVC is a flexible pipe, while ABS is a strong and shock-resistant pipe.

In addition, PVC pipes are much better at muffling the sound of flowing water, which ABS pipes cannot do. PVC pipes can also be called soundproof pipes, making them the best choice for indoor plumbing, while ABS pipes are good for underground or outdoor plumbing.

Cost-Efficiency

Both ABS and PVC pipes have almost similar prices. But joining ABS pipes requires only one step, which is done by joining with special cement.

While the ends of PVC pipes are treated with a purple primer before connecting, they are connected with special cement after drying, which is a two-step method.

This makes ABS pipe quick to install and a cost-effective choice.

Building Code

ABS is often a “regrind” or recycled resin plastic material, which leads to problems such as fatigue and failure of ABS pipes. Because of this, it is prohibited in some areas, while PVC pipes are not.

ABS pipes still serve as drains and sewer lines in many homes. As long as there is no problem with these pipes, there is no need to replace them with other pipes. If there is any problem with ABS pipes, you should replace them with PVC pipes.

But if you’re going to install ABS pipes, check your local building codes first.
