.xmp files but no pictures anymore in bridge

Please help! I keep loosing my pictures. I do use all the most recent soft ware and have a new Imac so that would not be a problem.

I also use bridge and photoshop. Everytime when I want to go back to older pictures that I have adjusted through camera raw and sometime through Photoshop I end up having .xmp files but NO PICTURES. What's going on?

More details? Where are these photos stored? Are they visible in the Finder? What version of Bridge and macOS?
