P: Crashes every time I click on a video

Since I updated LrC to version 14.0.1, I can't play videos in library mode any more. Lightroom crashes every time I click on a video.

(MacBook Pro, Intel), MAC OS 15.0.1, short video from iPhone 12 mini.

I have sent an error report to Adobe each time and had my system checked each time (no incompatibilities were found).

I'm seeing this too, crashing when opening video files in Loupe View in v14.01.

However, what I have discovered is that it seems to be related to video orientation. If I go into Loupe View on a video which is horizonal then it opens OK, and any other video I click on after that also displays and plays OK, regardless of orientation. However, if I go into Loupe View on a video which is vertical, then LrC crashes. Even if I've previously been into Loupe View starting with a horizontal video, and then played a vertical video whilst still in Loupe View, if I come out and then try to go back in on the same vertical video it'll cause a crash. I hope that makes sense!

The crash reports I've been submitting should all have my account email associated with them if needed.

I tested out what Oliver wrote, and it's exactly the same for me. The horizontals work when I move into Loupe view, the verticals make it crash. I can only see verticals by clicking around inside Loupe view via the icons at the bottom of the program.

Same problem here, but I was told I was the only one when I reported it here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/crash-when-selecting-video-files-lightr...

I'll note that this does not happen in Lightroom Classic 13, but of course you can't downgrade a catalogue once it's been upgraded to 14, so this means a loss of what might be a lot of work. It's been over a month now, when's the fix coming, Adobe?

So interesting what Oliver and Tom discovered about playing the videos. But I haven't tried it anymore.

Yesterday I had all the catalog data (LR version 14.0.1) written to xmp (to be on the safe side), uninstalled LR and downloaded version 13.5.1.

In case you are interested in how I solved the problem for myself:

Luckily I was out of town for 4 weeks and didn't have my external hard drive with the masters on it. All my masters were temporarily in an extra folder on my computer. But the pictures were in a sophisticated folder structure in a catalog with 30,000 photos, which crashed several times when I upgraded to 14.0.1 and then didn't work.

As expected, I could not open the said catalog in 14.0.1 with the 13.5.1 program. So I opened a new catalog in 13.5.1 and tried to import the photos from the 14.0.1 catalog. That was not possible either. So I had to re-import the masters - I took the opportunity to move them from my computer to the external SSD. The folder structure, which I had put a lot of effort into in this case, is of course lost. However, all keywords are actually also available in 13.5.1. After all. What luck!

I am throwing away the catalog I had updated to 14.0.1. I have now opened the last backup before the upgrade and crash (I actually make a backup every time I close LR, delete them months later and put the last backups before an upgrade in a “Before upgrade to…” folder) and will now import the new catalog with the travel photos into it.

Such an effort (time-wise and mental).

The greatest luck is that I only updated one of my smaller catalogs at all, I hadn't touched the others until today. They are now simply running on 13.5.1 again.

By the way: I won't be updating any more. For sure.

It's not the first time I've had problems (and was told that I'm unlucky and that this or that problem only happens in one in 10,000 cases). And yes, it's been over a month now ...

Same problem here. Was hoping 14.1.1 would address this, but apparently not. LR is crashing multiple times per hour on me. Not every switch to a video causes a crash, but I can't figure out what the trigger is. Have submitted as many crash reports as I can, but am losing patience.

I too was hoping 14.1.1 would address this but the behaviour is exactly the same as 14.0.1. In loupe view when I select a video, the video will not load and Lightroom crashes, If the video is in landscape mode it works okay, but consistently crashes if the video is in portrait mode. I have submitted several crash reports with my comments. Only workaround I can find at the moment is to delete video's from the catalog. I am using the latest MacOS on Intel.

Now that the other issues with v14 seem to have been resolved, I've been update to upgrade to it again and do some more digging into this one.

This, for me at least, seems to be related to the "Enable HDR in Library" option under Settings -> Performance. With that disabled I get a crash opening any vertical video in library loupe view, with it enabled they open without a crash.

I'm not really sure why that setting should make a difference, given that nothing in my library is HDR and nor are any of my screens (hence why I hadn't enabled it), plus I didn't see this issue in 13.5 which is where that setting was added, but it seems consistent - disabled = crash, enabled = no crash.

  1. Version of the app - Lightroom Classic 14.1.1
  2. Platform and OS version - MacOS Sequoia 15.1.1
  3. Basic steps to reproduce the problem - In Library mode, try to play any video and app crashes.
  4. Expected result and actual result - I want the videos to play and instead the app crashes and I can't play video.

Here is my issue - any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
