Photoshop 2025 bug: auto numbering in lists using text tool causes file corruption
I have identified a bug. I noticed that a new feature was when you use the text tool and type
1. text

2. text

3. text

this triggers auto numbering.

Well it took me four hours to figure out this is what was currupting my files and it is very repeatable

When you try to reopen the file, it says a problem wont allow it.

The auto numbering in text tool had been working ok without file corruption until very recently.

If I paste a list in text tool with numbers alread in place, it corrupts the file

if I start inserting numbers before a list in the text tool, it corrupts

my work around is this:

I type or paste this:

text

text

text

to create a numbered list i do this:

t1. ext

t2. ext

t3. ext

than i backspace to remove the first letter to create my desire:

1. text

2. text

3. test

the auto numbering feature either needs to be removed or fixed

under any circumstance, this feature if fixed, needs to be able to turned off, as it often interfers with work flow

to fixe the corrupted file that was unworkable, i had to open the file on another computer, and delete all text layers that showed a triangle with an exclaimation mark inside. once that was done, i could save and reopen the file. but if I added numbered lists with the text tool, it looked fine until I closed and tried reopening the file, then disaster. it was unworkable.

Whenever I try to open this one file, I get Text Layer Update prompt, and whether I say yes or no, it crashes Photoshop. Anyone else have this problem? Or a solution? If it's some how corrupted can I save it?

Hey @Cef_Grima0958

This sounds like a similar issue from a while back. May I ask what version of Photoshop you're currently using? You can find this information by going to Help > System info. Copy and paste that into a text file and attach it to your response.

Hello

I have a problem with my Photoshop app. Everytime I open a file containing images and texts, a pop up appears saying: "This action cannot be performed because of a program error". The same happens when I manage to open copies of this file, but they tell me that I have to update the text layers, which I proceed to do but some layers don't update themselves and when I try to update them manually, the same pop up appears with: "This action cannot be performed because of a program error". I have tried the fixes suggested by Adobe, but none of them unfortunately fix the problem. Do you know of any other way I could try to fix this issue? It only applies to files with texts and images but this has never happened before.

Thank you for your help!

Windows11
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700H 2.90 GHz
RAM64.0 GB

  • Tous mes calques utilisent ED Market, téléchargée directement via Creative Cloud.

i was able to get around deleting the erroneous text layers by creating a new, empty layer above and below the erroneous layers, then selecting the empty layer above and shift clicking the layer below them, then deleting them.

Can't delete layer without file crashing immediately after selecting it.

After today's photoshop update, the photoshop file I worked on yesterday will not open from today. (Problem file: file combining illustration and text) (Photoshop update 26.5 version)
Lowering the version opens files that were not opened without problems.

(Photooshop 26.2 version down)
The same error occurs when I open Photoshop after updating it again.
Is there a way to solve it?

On a first step, try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset-preferences

It's recommended to backup your settings before resetting the preferences.

See here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#backup-photoshop-preferences

This is happening to me right now and I'm saving it on the cloud. I save it and then almost immediatly it does not open back up. Also the files I am able to open says I need to update the text layers and I do but then when I click on any of the text that that had issues, the program freezes and shuts down completely.   Why is this happening and how can it be fixed?

Hi!

We are so sorry to hear you are having this problem. What version of Photoshop are you using? And do you know what version of Photoshop the files were built in? Do you have any Postscript Type 1 fonts in your document? If it is a version of Photoshop 2023 or newer, Photoshop will not play nice with Type 1 fonts and they will need to be changed to OpenType or TrueType.

Let us know what version of Photoshop you are running?

TEMP SOLUTION: if you have a corrupted file. just open it. update layers. then look in your layers. delete any layers that have a caution triangle. save as a new file name, so as not to destroy the original

I'm really struggling with this issue right now.

I have a PSD file that took me hours to create, but every time I try to open it, I get an alert message. Regardless of whether I click "No" or "Update," Photoshop crashes immediately.

How can I fix this problem?

One possible suspicion I have is that the file is quite long—it's 15,000px in height. However, this is just a guess, and I'm not sure if it's the actual cause.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

What about font-related trouble-shooting?
