P: (ACR hosted by Bridge) results in parsing error when opening in PS

Engaged ,
Oct 21, 2022 Oct 21, 2022

1) Open a file in Camera Raw hosted by Bridge

2) Create a mask using the new "People" feature, or use the new Content Aware tool (I guess other new features will trigger the same error, but these two are the ones I've tested)

3) Click open

When Photoshop opens, this errors message appears (and the file doesn't open):

parsing-error.jpg

"Could not open "(file name) because the file-format module cannot parse the file"

I'm using Windows 10 and the lastest Bridge/ACR/PS versions at the time of writing, but more people have reported this to me on my blog/YT channel.

You are one step ahead if you can even get Bridge to open a file. I have
sent numerous notices to Adobe with no response, so they apparently don't
consider it to be a problem.

To add: one thing I find interesting is if I go to an image thumbnail within the "contents" section in Bridge, and right-click to "open with Adobe Photoshop", the image will go to the ACR screen and open in Photoshop without issues. I'm not sure if this means anything, or if it will help, but I've been able to open up various individual images like that. This work if you select multiple images too.

I am having the same exact problem described above by Eigil.  I have made all the file type associations described in the thread and performed several restarts of my computer, but the same error displays when I try to open a file from Bridge-ACR via "Open" button.  However, right-click on thumbnail in Bridge, Open with>Photoshop 2023 24.0 works correctly.

This is apparently a bona fide bug, there's a lot of similar posts now.

With all the publicity this is getting, I'd expect a fix pretty soon.

Since updating from Bridge 12.0.03.270  to 13.0.0.562, if I try to open an edited ACR into Photoshop v24.0 I get this message

"Could not open file xxxx because this file format module cannot parse the file'

The only way around this is to save the modified raw file and open directly in Photoshop, or as I have now done reverted back to Bridge 12.0.03.270.

I can only assume this is caused by the latest version of Bridge as nothing else has changed. I am using Windows 10, plenty of memory and a good graphics card.

Any suggestions?

Hey,

does anybody have the same issue ?

I open a .dng in Bridge > Camera Raw (15) and I develop it.

Then I press open but it does not open in ps.

And its not consistant. Sometimes it opens sometimes not.

Anybody?

Is this a known issue?

thnx Peter

Some are reporting issues with Bridge hosting ACR so check in the Bridge forum.

No issues having Photoshop host (without Bridge) ACR?

I just installed the latest update for Photoshop to 24.0.0 as well as the latest update for ACR. I'm working on a Macbook Pro (2019), Monterey v. 12.5.1. I'm working on a set of images that are all 8 bit .tif files, opened them in ACR, did some basic edits/straightening and tried to open the 6 images I was working on in PS. For the first three images I get this error message:

Could not open “LCPool-JR-221108-001.tif” because the file-format module cannot parse the file.;

The other three images opened normally. It appears to be because I used the healing brush set to the new 'Content aware remove' setting on those images to remove sensor dirt. (I reset the healing brush tool to remove my corrections and the image opened normally). Can anyone suggest a reason why this is happening? It's kind of pointless to have a 'content aware remove' setting if you can't then open the image in PS.

I think this is a known issue where those functions simply "dirty up" your file by adding extraneous data. I seem to remember threads suggesting to duplicate the file in LR after the operation and use those instead of the original, so maybe that is an option.

Thats what I thouhgt ....

Because its the first time that that happens.

And I was wondering if other user where experiencing the same issue.

So I guess the dev team is working to solve it.

I re-downloaded the same files from my camera and didn't have any issues.  Also, if you open the image in CR and then save it as a tiff you should be able to get around any problems.

I recently installed the October 1, 2022 release of PS on a fully updated Win 10 PC.  I have been using PS for some 20 years and since Adam was a boy, I have been able to do as follows:

  1. Open .CR2 image in Bridge and make adjustments
  2. Click on Open (btoom right corner), resulting in opening the image in PS.

In this new release this simple, efficient process no longer works.  I have discovered a time consuming and frustrating work-around as follows:

  1. Open .CR2 image into Camera RAW and make adjustments
  2. Click on Open, resulting in Camera RAW closing and returning me to the .CR2 source files
  3. Click on Open (top left corner) in PS, resulting in opening the .CR2 image collection
  4. Open the .CR2 image again in Camera RAW
  5. Click on Open in Camera RAW, resulting (finally) in the image opening in PS

I have inspected the File Compatibility settings, but see nothing wrong there.

Another work around is:

  1.  Select an image in Bridge
  2. Click Open in the PS launch page, resulting in the file opening in Camera RAW, make adjustments
  3. Click Open in Camera RAW, resulting in the image opening in PS

I have update photoshop 2023, bridge 2023 with camera raw 15. I found two problem after I did this update.

1. Camera raw no longer open photoshop automatically when you click 'open ' button,  after macro photo adjustment.

2. JPG is not the defaut saving format for photoshop, each time I save photo I have to switch PSD to JPG.

I have reinstall photoshop 2023 and bridge 2023 again, but problem stay.

My computer is pc, OS is windows 10.

Windows 11 Pro Bridge + ACR + Olympus RAW files.

I seem to have the notorious ACR parsing error but only after going from Bridge to ACR then adding masks.   If I re-edit the same image and remove the masks the problem disappears. I can then open the file directly from Photoshop, convert to a Smart Object and open in ACR and the same maksing will then work.  The problem is happing only with a few edits and apparently at random but is still really annoying.

Why have replies been stopped to the main post on this topic? Too many embarrasing responses?

New day, new problem.

(how I love spending two days and many hours trying to do a task that should take all of 20 minutes)

Today's problem:

I adjust an image in ACR, click "Open" to move it into PS, but nothing happens.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, updated, reverted, rebooted, etc. all to no avail.

Any advice?

(yes, I can save the images as jpgs from ACR and then open them from PS but that's not what I want to do)

Thank you.

Which (exact) version of Photoshop and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you tried resetting Photoshop back to the factory defaults?

Are you accessing ACR from Bridge rather than directly from Photoshop?

This appears to be a Bridge bug; others have reported this. Check out the Bridge Forum if indeed, you are trying to go from Bridge to ACR to Photoshop.

Ever since I updated with the latest updates, (11/17/22) when I am using Camera Raw and I use the "open" button to go into Photoshop, only about half of the time this works. The other times it just closes the Camera Raw screen and I have to re-open from Bridge (which opens Raw again) and then when I use the open button it will then open in PS. Was curious if others might be having the same issue?
