P: Beta: Output appearance of HDR images varies on different GPU settings

Hi.

I've just tested the AVIF HDR output on ACR 15.1 on Apple Silicon Macbook Pro.

It seems broken when GPU acceleration is enabled. The exported images are distorted.

When GPU acceleration is disabled in ACR, the HDR content cannot be displayed, but when exported it's correct - it is correctly display by supported browser (Chrome 108+)

Greetings all,

Updates for Adobe Photography products have been released.  The February 2023  updates contain a fix for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for your patience.

Cool. I've managed to extract Camera RAW plugin from the pkg without using Rosetta (hate to have it installed).

I can confirm, that export with GPU enabled works well now.

Yes, we will eventually also release the installer natively via the normal Creative Cloud app.

In the meantime, please try the one I linked to earlier.  The installer needs Rosetta, but the ACR 15.1.1 plug-in is Universal and therefore contains native Apple silicon code.

Will there be also MAC installer for Apple Silicon?

The one linked seems to be Intel only as it requires Rosetta to install.

We've just released Camera Raw 15.1.1 which fixes this bug. Please note that this is currently only available via the web links below (not via the main CC installer app):

We've confirmed the issue is related to Output Sharpening when GPU is enabled in HDR mode.  We're working on a fix.

In the meantime, the workarounds are (a) disable "Use GPU for image processing" in Preferences/performance, as you already identified, or (b) disable Output Sharpening.

Thanks for your help & patience.

Hi Pawel,

Could you profice a few more details to help us understand the bug?
Please provide a copy of the original file and it's settigns (the one you are exporting).
Can you share with us a log file from Camera Raw? Please see section 4 "Collect detailed logs" on the Camera Raw GPU FAQ: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html

Thank you for your help,
David

Hi,

Under following link:

https://pawel.online/public/for_adobe_bug/

I've place the original file (CR3) and its settings (XMP). There are also two folders with files and logs with and without GPU enabled.

Just to clarify. In both cases the GPU is enabled for image processing.

Option With_GPU -> the GPU is enabled also for file import/export

Option Without_GPU -> the CPU is disabled for file import/export. This option creates correct output AVIF file.

Hi Pawel, can you please explain what you mean by "the exported images are distorted" ?  Can you please post a screenshot or an example of the result?  Thanks.

Also, could you share what settings you used in the Save dialog?

This is the photo of correct image:

And this is the distorted one (much more contrast and severe banding on higlight area)

Nothing changed between export - just disabled GPU for import/expoert.

Hello, can you check the color profile of the exported files?
