P: Combination of Preset and Nikon 35mm AF-D F2 Lens Profile cause unusual masking behavior

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 11.1

Build 202112022200-7fd1f998

Camera Raw 14.1

ISSUE: An unknown combination of adjustments 'breaks' the new mask / brush mask tool, causing LR classic to make the brush size 'maximum size' regardless of what the brush settings are actually set to.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

1) Open a RAW file - In my case, raw from a Nikon D600 (Full exif on request)

(1a / OPTIONAL: Confirm the mask/brush tool is working as expected)

2) Apply the preset (made by me) "Frosty Caravan" (preset attached)

3) Attempt to use the brush tool. If the issue has been replicated you will notice it that regardless of whatever brush size, feather, strength you select, the brush will act as if all sliders have been set to max - size, feather, flow, etc - all act as if set to max, despite this change not being inputted to or reflected by the sliders.

Picture attached of a single click using the mask/brush tool - note the settings to the right, compare with the affected area visible in the mask overlay

EXTRA INFORMATION: THE PRESET

I did nothing special to create this, no outside editors or manipulation outside of LRC at all. I was working on a photo, liked the colour grading I had done on it, so decided to save it as a preset so that I could use it on other photos I took in that location/at that time easily.

PRESET ATTACTHED TO THIS BUG REPORT

Supplimental Info PART 3 -

IT IS CAUSED BY DISTORTION CONTROL! THE BUG IS WITH DISTORTION CONTROL!

One of the settings in "Frosty Caravan" is distortion control set to +200 (maximum setting) When playing around with this slider, you can see that as you go up the range from the standard of 100, all kinds of funky weird stuff starts happening - PICS ATTACHED - note that the only change here is the distortion control slider.

Annotations for images:

distortioncontrol_normal - this is the slider in default position - everything works as expected

discortioncontrol_155 - this is where things start to go wrong - the dots are now faded, and the dot top right has vanished

distortioncontrol_160 - things are really going wrong. some of the dots seem to have exploded in size, others remain unaffected

distortioncontrol_165 - further chaos, wheras we had 2 blown mask dots before, now there is just one, but other dots are missing

distortioncontrol_170 - things look a bit more normal again, but you can see the dots to the right and left have fully vanished

This continues until about 180 where we are off to the races again and it goes crazy.

So - There is a bug with the distortion control, whereby it affects the mask tool - It also seems to affect ALL mask modes, linear, radial, brush, etc - have a play around and see what you find but the problem is definitley with the distortion control module.

Using your preset, I cannot replicate the behavior.

Tested raw and JPEG - All brush functions work normally.

I would recommend your resetting your preferences to see if it mitigates the anomalous behavior.

This procedure works for both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop.

If you are using Lightroom Desktop it can change the location of your local storage. Please review this setting after resetting preferences.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Hi Rikk, did you see my updates, specifically the most recent one where I narrowed the problem down to distortion control affecting the masks? It's not just brush mask either, it's all of them.

Hi, I have some supplimental info -

I reset the image, then selected a different one of my presets - just a basic one that I apply on import sometimes. I then used the mask / brush tool to write "TEST" and do a smiley face. The tool works as expected. This is file "bug1.JPG".

I then applied the "frosty caravan" preset, and you can see from the image what it does to the brush tool. This is file "bug2.JPG"

To be clear I did not use the brush tool again after I had written "TEST 🙂 ", the ONLY change/edit was me clicking the "frosty caravan" preset.

It is noteworthy to me that after clicking that preset, part of the T is missing from the end of TEST and that the smiley face has totally disappeared.

It's almost as if LRC is applying some massive gaussian blur to the area defined by the brush tool, and then adding further effects on top of that. But only on PART of the image. Very odd.

Pics Attached.

Further info 2:

It's defo doing something to the actual mask.

Here, I put a series of "dots" that using a fairly small strong brush across the image (file bug1a.JPG) - the brush/tool works as expected.

I then applied the "frosty caravan" preset, clicked "done" to exist the mask tool, and brought the exposure down to roughly match - Where have the dots gone? The mask itself has been affected by the bug. (File bug2a.JPEG)
