Camera RAW update in Elements 15 impossible

Hi, I am owner of Elements 15, which I've had for about a year and I am now confronted with a problem where basically.... if its not sorted.... I can throw away Elements 15. I have even spoken to the Adobe Hotline and they can't even help. So they suggested I contacted you cracks. I have the following problem.

I recently bought a new Camera, and although I use it mostly for filming... I also intend to photograph quite a lot with it- I bought the Panasonic FZ200, or as it is known in America the FZ2500. I was most disappointed, when trying to load RW files into Photoshop elements using the installed Camera RAW Version 9.7.0.668... that it refused and told me to download a newer version of Camera RAW.

After fighting my way through Adobe online pages which just seemed to go round in circles, I took it into my own hands and downloaded 11.1..... which installed correctly...... but didn't work. In Elements there is still only 9.8 installed. It would appear that I need ATLEST 9.8, which is not available anywhere and neither are any downloads for version up to 10.something, which are the only oney compatible with my elements 15.

So firstly, elements 15 does not automatically install the latest RAW driver but neither does it give me any opportunity to import RAW files from my camera...so...at the moment, it's a waste of money AND a disappointment. I do not want to resort to the 2 step, thankyou mam DNG converter!

I know I COULD buy an upgrade for 80€ ....or the newest version for 99€.... but to be honest I don't work THAT much with it to make 200€ really worthwhile....and it's a bit of a shambles from Adobe to not support older versions of their lower budget programmes.

Can anyone help me? Looking forward to your comments and tips.

Thx

John

I assume you mean the FZ2000 (known in the US as the FZ2500).

As you state, that camera was first supported in Camera Raw 9.8 and you should be able to update Elements 15 to Camera Raw 9.10.

See if the following download links help

It might have helped, but having downloaded the Adobe CameraRAW-9.10.1-CC.... it requires me to now download an application manager!

Hi John,

Your frustration is obvious, I am sorry for this issue.

One way to bypass the whole issue is to download the DNG Converter here:

Adobe Digital Negative Converter

After converting your images to DNG (Digital Negative), you should be able to use your images without issues in PSE 15.

FWIW, I have the latest/greatest Adobe stuff and I ALWAYS convert to DNG after importing my CR2 images from my Canon camera for a bunch of reasons. You will lose nothing (and gain much) to do this conversion.

Let us know if this works for you.

If you go to

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins

do you see a CC folder with a File Formats folder inside with a Camera Raw plugin?

If so, right click on the Camera Raw plugin and click Get Info and see if the version is 11.1

Thanks Jeff, and to everyone else who is so kindly trying to help.

The version appears to be 10.05 and was created on the 8.8.18

If I look in Elements though under plugins, it tells me that it still uses 9.7.0.668

My attempt at installing Adobe CameraRAW-9.8-CC-mul-AdobeUpdate, failed. I got the following mistake when trying to install even 9.8

"Updates cold not be applied.

This patch is not applicable for you. Please check....."

Maybe it is because I have now installed the Adobe application manager.

Completely lost

Hello, I am so thankful to have found this thread!!! I am having the same issue with Elements 15. I have followed all these links, done multiple downloads, installed/reinstalled, Adobe customer service has been useless, and now contemplating on just returning my new camera. My Camera Raw Plug-In is Version 9.6.0.625 yet nothing I do helps. I use only my Elements 15 to adjust my photos. I am not a professional but do allot of shooting. I am getting to the age of where I am not comfortable with change or having to learn some new program with a heck of a learning curve just to adjust my pics. My OS is Windows and my new camera I bought myself this past Christmas is the Canon Rebel T7 24MP DSLR WiFi. I still have Christmas pics on the card I can't do anything with because I shoot in RAW. I do a ton of graphics with my Elements 15 but don't feel I need to upgrade just to edit my photos. I did install that DNG (Digital Negative) but when I try to open my photos from my SD card it doesn't recognize any pics on it and the card appears empty when there are photos on it.

Please help ladies and gents! I will be eternally grateful to find a fix to all this.

Does Camera Raw for Photoshop CC also work for Elements?

I have always understood them to be different.

Hi Daniel,

This is not quite true.

While the tool sets between ACR for PS and Lightroom* are very similar (outside of some UI uniqueness), the tools between the ACR that you get with PSE and PS are radically different. So the answer to John Waller's question has to be qualified. It's probably the same ACR (I'm guessing here) but with fewer features turned on and are therefor inaccessible.

It's been several years since I've looked at PSE but I was very surprised as to how different the toolsets were. While you can do basic adjustments with PSE, any of the sophisticated levels of adjustments are just not there.

*Lightroom is essentially ACR with a database. Obviously it's more than that but that's why one does not refer to Lightroom's ACR as Lightroom IS ACR (with that database thingy).

Of course Gary, but you still download the same ACR install file no matter which you are using (Lightroom, Photoshop or elements). The way the applications use ACR is where the differences lay. The main part of the download for ACR is the database of how the software is supposed to interpret the data coming from the various cameras. The adjustment controls basically come from the software being used, ie: Elements.

Sure Daniel,

I just didn't want John, or anyone, to see ACR via PS at a friends house and then go home, download the same ACR into PSE and be disappointed.

That's all.

ACR is a plugin for Photoshop and Elements, whereas it is hard coded into Lightroom. So the ACR plugin installer is for Photoshop and Elements only. Updates to ACR in Lightroom are part of the regular program updates.

Actually Pat, it's hard in all of the programs, Photoshop, Elements and even Bridge. It seems different in Lightroom since all lightroom actually is is just Camera Raw merged with an enhanced Bridge. The updates we all download for Camera Raw are the data packages for all of the new cameras and what-not that you can access. The actual controls for Camera Raw come from the application (ie: Photoshop). That's one of the reasons why you only see updates to the controls or layout of Camera Raw when there are updates to the main application. (Learned that directly from one of the coders who is a developer for Camera Raw)

Hi Daniel,

Sorry but that's quite wrong. ACR is a plugin. There's nothing from within PS that controls anything in ACR. To be more specific, you can intentionally have ACR open up as a plugin to Bridge OR PS.

The relationship from Lightroom and Bridge is like the relation of a spreadsheet to an actually database. In other words, there is no relationship beyond the fact that you can observe images in both. You can also observe images in either the Finder or Explorer but that does not make them either Bridge or Lightroom. Lightroom is ACR with a database. Bridge has no database capabilities whatsoever.

And yes, updates to ACR do have new camera and lens updates but each iteration of ACR we receive also has new capabilities. Please compare ACR from a year ago to what we have now and enjoy the new features.

That's what I was not clear on.

I've always had the impression that the ACR installers for full Photoshop and Photoshop Elements were different. Based on your explanation above, it seems that's not the case. Same installer for both.

As Per Berntsen mentions, the ACR plugin does not apply to Lightroom. The ACR engine is built into the LR program code. Updating Lightroom includes updated ACR.

That's what has always puzzled me.

ACR updates for Photoshop CC are sometimes issued first with the Elements ACR update coming later.

Elements users have had to wait until the plugin is available via the Updater mechanism inside Elements. I've often wondered why they cannot download the ACR update for CC and install that without waiting for the Elements Updater to be ready.

Ha!

Yes, to answer that I'd have to have a higher clearance (full disclosure, I have no clearance...)

Yes, it's true, sometimes the new features are released in PSE before PS and vise versa.

However, I am unaware of any features with ACR itself that have been released in PSE before PS. We are talking about three different development teams here: ACR, PSE, and PS. I'm sure there's a grand poobaa that watches over the whole shebang but the teams do work independently and jointly.
