Announcing a new feature now in Adobe Camera Raw (17.2) – Removal of Distracting People
Under the Remove dialog, under Distraction Removal, we have added an item called “People”.
This feature supports faster and easier detection and removal of distracting people in an image. It is offered as a Tech Preview in the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin-only and is available now. Please try it out and let us know what works well, what doesn’t work well, and anything that might improve the experience.
Thank you!

I love the idea, but until this includes the ability to edit the mask, this feature is only meaningfully functional for a very limited set of images - one for which there are already robust tools available.

The tool is inconsistent. Sometimes it finds people, sometimes it doesn’t , even when they’re looking right at the camera. If someone is standing behind the main subject, it usually misses them completely.
It also tends to over-select. For example, I had my subject carrying a tent with two helpers behind. The tool picked up not only the helpers but the tent itself, with no option to deselect the tent.
Right now there’s no way to refine or adjust the selection, which makes the tool underdeveloped and not really ready for real use. Do hope you bring it up to speed sooner rather than later. Thank you.

Bastante bueno trabajando con fotografías nocturnas.

It would be great if we could add people (in the background) that hadn't been detected autmatically.
Also, to be able to edit the areas that have been detected autmatically, by adding or substracting.
I'm a professional photographer using Lr daily.
Thank you!

I used distraction removal (in PS RAW) for a man (full length) partially behind a group of three people. It removed the man but left just a cartoonish face of a different man with a large moustache instead.

Hi,
I just installed LrC version 14.5.1 and tried the features after a failing debut in v. 14.4. The Distraction Removal of People: the red overlay with the pins appeared on only one image. I don't get any overlay on most pictures, so I can only remove all of the found people.
Anyway when closing and reopening LrC, all removed people reappear after a second, i.e. on all pictures independly of above scenarios. The changes are however applied when exporting the pictures. This is the same behavior as in v. 14.4.
Best regards,

This feature is working better than I anticipated! It is quite valuable when photographing landscapes with people in the foreground. Knowing this, I no longer have to stand and wait, hoping that the crowds will disappear!

Hi, A Selection Brush tool would be great to add to this feature so I can determine which person is distracting.

What does NOT work well is that we have absolutely no control to finesse whatever selection lightroom deems ''correct." Meaning, not only does it often select the person, but it selects a whole bunch of nearby objects that is not removed, but rather completely altered to have absolutely nothing to do with the original image nor anything one would ever wish to include.
PLEASE allow us to fine tune your selections, erase bits we don't want 'removed' so that we needn't waste time undoing and redoing over and over again.

I do agree with your comment. I have suggested at different occasions to Adobe and the community to include the Lr/LrC/CR masking options to the Remove (and replace) tool, so that better selections would make better and more effective results.
Why not make the masking tools the first step to more changes in Lightroom? Even Lens Blur could benefit from it. But start with (all of) the Remove tools.
Kind regards,
Thierry

Persons after a fence are not selected, although they are recognizable .

The Distracting People tool is a very helpful feature, especially in travel photography, when we can't always wait for the scenes to be pristine for a shot of our subject. However, the inability to adjust the AI-chosen area limits the tool's success. For example, I just used it to remove a few people in the background, between my wife's head and my head. Result was good, but not quite usable, because the action also removed most of my right ear! So, I had to Undo and apply the standard Remove tool manually.

It would be helpful if there is also the option of choosing which people you wish to be removed rather than only from the ones chosen by the programme . Sometimes they are different. Great tool however a wider scope would be beneficial.

This is a significant enhancement. It is a pleasure to see how accurately people are discovered and eliminated. I have found that in a specific instance, the people were found, but the human figure on horseback was skipped over. I am very impressed.

I would also like the ability to select people as AI didn't get them all

If I want to remove people, why does KI replace them with other people. That+s quite silly.

Mehr als 12 Personen jeweils als Pärchen am Strand. Alle weg. Jetzt ein perfektes Strandmotiv. Auf den ersten Blick nichts an Rändern oder Bildresten zu sehen.

I like that it will chose the person in the background but sometimes it misses. It would be great to add a person in the mix as easily as it is to remove someone. Perhaps there could be a select all option and you could then delete the masks from those whom you want to keep?
Also, sometimes when a background person intersects a person you're keeping, it can be a little too agressive removing part of the person in the foreground. It would great great to have a history brush to brush back what you want to keep.

Would love it if it could generate other possibilities - I find it often distorts fences and buildings in unacceptable ways on the first try
