P: Generative Remove Feedback (Camera Raw)

Adobe Employee ,
Aug 13, 2024 Aug 13, 2024
This post applies to Camera Raw.
Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Ecosystem feedback can be found here.
Previous Early Access Feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

As Generative AI analyzes portions of the image that have been cropped out, Camera Raw has the ability to toggle Show Uncropped Image is now available to guide you in your Generative Remove selection.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

Using Generate Remove in ACR through Bridge all day. Made multiple removes to one image, saving each step after I removed each item. I saw all the changes being applied, after saving 5 or so steps, I had removed all the items. Saved changes by closing image in ACR, as I have been doing all day. Went back to Lightroom Classic, see I have made changes to that image, saved changes to XMP file, but strangely changes do not show up. I go back to ACR, and see that the image no longer has any of the retouching I did to it, even though under snapshots, I can see each and every snapshot I saved, but for some reason, the snapshots have lost all the work I did on each one!

I reviewed all my edits in Lightroom, and saw that there were many other images where the changes I made in ACR not been made to the images in Lightroom, and were in fact, lost in ACR, even though I could still see the steps I recorded, which, of course did not actually have the changes in them that I had made and were there previously! I’ve then went back to Bridge, and see the previously applied. edits have disappeared from a bunch of thumbnails. I counted roughly 28 of the 131 images I had spent all day working on had lost their changes!!! What the hell?????

Just went back to start trying to redo all the images that lost their Generative Remove – touched up an image, saving the two snapshots, and then took a screenshot of the retouched area showing the image with the edits, clicked Done. I see on the thumbnail in Bridge that changes do not show up. I reopened the image in ACR, I see my two new saved snapshots (A & B), but the corrections have disappeared again. Rolling over or clicking on saved snapshots does nothing to show changes that were made, and then saved to the specific snapshot, and have been totally lost.

GR saved.png  GR lost.png  Snapshots.png

One more strange thing – for the images that kept their Generative Remove work, if I open them up into ACR, it shows the changes, but if I then mouse over the saved snapshot that captured those changes, they actually shows me the uncorrected state, not the retouched state as you would expect it to.  Makes no sense!

I really need this to work as I need to turn in the job tomorrow.

Tried opening an image into Photoshop, instead of clicking Done, and the image opened, showing the changes I made with Generator Remove. Tried working on a second image, using Generative Remove, then did a final cropping step, which I forgot on the previous image. I also opened it into Photoshop, but it did not show that change I made in Generative Remove or the crop I made. And the thumbnail in Bridge also does not reflect those changes I just made. Like before, ACR shows those two snapshots I saved, but clicking or rolling over them changes nothing in the window.

Another problem, which makes simple retouching take forever, is on certain images when trying to remove an object from a wooden table, sometimes Generative Remove does a really great job taking out the object, but other times it creates a random image that has no bearing on the overall image –sometimes it’ll put in a yellow flower or a lemon, when there’s nothing in the image that would suggest either of those two items. Or will just create some sort of AI garbage as one of the three, or all three options, or in some cases, the only option (as I previously mentioned- sometimes I just keep generating single removals, while other times that option totally disappears and it commits the AI slop image without being able to try again without totally deleting it, and reselecting object to be removed). This means that trying to redo all these images is not a simple process, as sometimes it takes 5 to 10 minutes just to remove a book from a wooden table, while GR on other images that are more complicated work perfectly fine right away.

I have been trying to take screenshots to illustrate the slop, but sometimes the act of taking a screenshot commits the AI generated “correction” while other times I can keep going through the second or third option, if it exists. And generative remove sure loves to create yellow objects…

I have had the same experience with random objects being put in where the original object was removed.

Launched the Creative Cloud app, saw there’s an update to Photoshop 26.8.1 and ACR 17.4.1, so I updated.  ACR seems to work better on Generative Remove, although it’s still about 50% failure rate that it saves the changes that I make.  In one image that needed a lot of work I did one section saved it and it saved the changes. Then I did the second section, saved it and it made the changes. Did the third section, saved it and ACR erased all the changes, so this has still not solved the issue satisfactory. Going to be a long night…

I've tried the reflection removal tool on 3 images and the tool failed to perform. Granted that two were fairly complicated and on the 3rd removed objects behind a window that should have remained in the image, but missed entirely the reflection that I wanted to remove.

Do you know how to fix this?

Thank you

THere are times I cannot export a dng file (created from denoise) as JPG,  I am not sure why.   THere are also times when using the blur tool, the file will not export as JPG.   So far, I have been able to move the images to Photoshop and save a copy as JPG.   I do not know why this is happening.   Can you shed any light on it?

The most recent raw update has not been kind to the generative remove tool.

It leaves a stain around the selected area and is far less accurate than it was prior to the update. I don't understand how you can take a tool that worked very well, and make it perform worse with an update. Adding the "Distraction Removal" section was not worth the issues this update has created, and its honestly an unecessary addition when it was already very simple to select individuals and reflections for removal.

HELP.

Not sure if you guys are still monitoring this particular post, but I've been noticing a real bug in reflection removal. This used to happen somewhat infrequently before the latest couple of updates, but for me it's now occurring on every photo. Here's the scenario: if you use denoise before using reflection removal, it completely disables reflection removal's ability to ... well, remove reflections. It might remove a little haze, but that's it.

I do a lot of interior shots in dark museums, and wind up with some significant noise. So I use the denoise tool often, then tweak the results so that I retain as much detail in the shot as possible. Unfortunately, I also have to deal with highly reflective museum glass cases. Now I'm stuck. Three exports are below - original, with no tweaks; reflection removal used, but no denoise; and denoise and reflection removal applied. You'll note that the version where denoise was used is virtually identical to the unmodified original, save the removal of a bit of haze.

Here's a link to the original RAW file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZGuPTHEvfbIVaIqJKMbvnBX9X5AtBM8L/view?usp=sharing

Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm using Canon CR3 RAW files, and previously everything worked great, for the most part. Now I have to decide between denoise or reflection removal - I can't use both. Huge issue for me.

I was working on an image a few weeks ago, using Generative Remove, in ACR, and afterwards the XMP file was 8.8 MB. Today I opened it again into ACR, and applied a blur on top of my previous GR edits, then opened it into Photoshop. Looking back at the XMP file, I expected it to grow a little bit, but instead it shrunk to 1MB for some reason. Before blur.pngAfter blur.png

Looked at another file with some Generative Remove work, opened it into ACR, did one more GR edit and opened into Photoshop- the XMP shrunk on this one as well.

I think I was not seeing at the ACR file as well- so for this example, the XMP shrunk, while the ACR grew. Maybe that explains some of the discrepancy.

Lastly, a file with GR applied weeks ago, then opened today into Photoshop with NO changes made to GR, Blur or any other settings- XMP file size dropped by almost 3 MB, but nothing else increased.

Generative remove often seems to create something entirely new for me. I'm removing a box; it creates a chair. I'm removing a person; it creates and umbrella. It's very odd.
