P: Reflection Removal feedback (CR & LrClassic)

This post applies to Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.  

Adobe Camera Raw team is sharing an early look of our new Reflection Removal feature, which removes reflections caused by plate glass surfaces from photos. 

Note: 

• The feature currently only works on raw photos. Support for JPEGs & HEICs is added in the April 24 Update.

• There is a known issue on some Windows machines where the feature may produce a corrupt image. We are working on a fix for the upcoming release.

Getting started with the Reflection Removal feature: 

• Make sure you have the “New AI Features and Settings Panel” Technology Preview enabled in the Camera Raw plug-in Preferences dialog (requires restarting the host application to activate). 

• Go to the Remove panel [B] , and in the “Distraction Removal” section, click on the “Reflections” checkbox. 

• Optionally adjust the slider after the ML model is done computing. 

• Use the rest of the Camera Raw tools just like you would otherwise. 

When using the slider, the key values to note are: 

• 0 – the input photo

• 100 – de-reflected (window reflections removed) photo 

• -100 – reflection photo (what the window was reflecting towards the camera) 

Please try the feature and share feedback in this community forum. It would help to include details like how you access Camera Raw (via Adobe Bridge or Photoshop), your computer system details, and as much information about what you like or do not like about the resulting photo quality. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience. 

When to use Reflection Removal

The feature is designed to deal with large-area reflections when shooting through windows. Many other types of reflections occur in nature and are captured in photographs, but this feature may not recognize and handle those. We plan to work on expanding the supported reflection types in the future. 

Example use-cases for the feature include: 

• Looking through windows inside-out (e.g., from the car, airplane, room windows, etc.) 

• Looking through windows outside-in (e.g., shop windows) 

• Museums (e.g., paintings behind glass, glass case exhibits, etc.) 

How best to use Reflection Removal

For best results, try the new feature following these suggestions: 

• Apply Reflection Removal before applying any other edits to the photo, except for Enhance features such as Denoise
  • The changes made to the photo may be quite profound and render any changes you already made inappropriate.
  • If you plan to use both Enhance (Denoise, Super Resolution, or Raw Details) and Reflection Removal on a photo, it is better to apply Enhance first.
• Play with the feature slider and adjust the removal strength as appropriate.
• If you applied Adobe Adaptive (beta) profile prior to running the Reflection Removal feature, please update it or you may see traces of removed reflections still present in the photo (Adobe Camera Raw will remind you to do this).

Update (01-16-2025)

To improve the performance and results of this feature, it is important that examples of images that are failing to properly remove the reflections are forwarded to the team via your report.  A large variety of file formats are allowed as attachments in these forum posts. The best option is to attach your image's raw file directly to your feedback post. Note that there is a 50 MB limit on an attachment's file size. If your raw file is too large to attach, the best option is to share the file via a file-sharing service (Dropbox or similar) and then share the link in your feedback post. That explains, why it removed some of the reflections in my workflow. I didn't actually crop the picture. I marked the area, copied, created a new image and paste only that part. So, it had no other information of a larger picture when I applied the reflection removal.
Then I copied the result back to the original picture and aligned it.

So, I tried another one :
1. Duplicate the RAW file in Windows Explorer
2. Open with PS (the ACR module opens, not the Camera Raw filter)
3. Crop the image to only the rear window see screen capture
4. Clic DONE
5. Open the image again in ACR, and start the reflection tool, with the BEST (Meilleur in french) option.
Processing time, about 10 minutes !
Same result : No change in the image.

Also... I tried to ZIP the CR3 RAW file, but the file size goes from 49850 Kb to ... 49639 Kb. Bad luck, your forum accepts only less than 47 Mb files.

My guess about that is the camera might already be saving the CR3 as a raw file with compression, so it isn’t possible to save much more space by applying another round of lossless compression. So yes, they should increase the upload file size limit.

The remove reflections tool removes reflections from glass that covers the whole field of view of the camera. It does not remove reflections from small window panes that are part of the scene, as in the example you have posted. This is intentional. Why? While you might wish to remove this reflection from this small truck window, there are many other situations in which people do not want to remove such reflections—for example, reflections from distant buildings in a city. There is currently no way for you to tell the remove reflections tool which reflections you want to remove, and which ones you want to keep. The tool therefore does not remove reflections from small panes of glass in the scene. It removes reflections from glass that covers your view—for example, if you are riding on a bus or train, and looking out of the window from your seat.

Sorry to hear you’re running into this. To help figure out what’s causing it, could you please share:

• System Info – In Photoshop, go to Help > System Info, then copy and paste the details here.

• Whether the issue happens with all images or only certain files.

This will help us narrow down whether it’s a system compatibility problem or something specific to certain images.

Any time I try reflection removal it gives me a error image (see image). 

This happens both with jpeg images and raw images.  In all quality modes (Preview, Standard and Best).

I'm using the latest version of PS 26.8.0 but previous version was also giving me this error.

I'm on a Macbook Pro 2017 with 16GB ram, 1.4ghz quard core intel i5.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Hi, thanks for reaching out, and we're sorry about the trouble! 

Please go to the Photoshop menu, then Settings, then select Camera Raw. It should give you the Camera Raw preferences window. There, go to the Performance tab, and disable the option to Use Graphics Processor. Once done, click on Ok and restart Photoshop to check if you continue to experience the same behavior.

I seached the Adobe website for Mac minimum system requirements for photoshop --

• Processor: Multicore Intel® or Apple Silicon processor (2 GHz or faster with SSE 4.2 or later) with 64-bit support.

• RAM: 8 GB.
• Graphics Card: GPU with Metal support and 1.5 GB of GPU memory.

• Hard Disk Space: 20 GB of available hard-disk space.
• Internet: Internet connection and registration are necessary for required software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.

Same error happens here with all those rectanglar artifacts after rendering. I have 2018 MacBook Pro i9 2.9GHz 32GB RAM Radeon pro 560X 4GB, running Sequioia 15.5 and Photoshop 26.9. I do recall when Reflection Removal filter was first available in PS beta verion for testing, it ran fine on my machine. I was impressed. But turned out it broke when it was offically launched later. Disabling the GPU does not happen! What happened Adobe? Pls fix it! Thx.

Sorry to hear the Reflection Removal feature isn’t working as expected on your setup. You mentioned rectangular artifacts appearing after rendering. To help us investigate this further, could you please share a few more details?

• Screenshots showing the before and after results on a few sample images

• Are the artifacts consistent across all images, or only with certain types of reflections or lighting conditions?

• What’s the file format of the images you’re using (e.g., JPEG, PSD, RAW)?

• Are there any custom settings or third-party plug-ins installed that might affect rendering?

If I may contribute here… same issue with me. The artifacting looks different with each image I try, and yes it goofs up all of them. I have only tried it with layerd PSDs. No third party or customs settings that I'd be aware of. Thanks!

I've been following this problem with these Mac Pro machines, since I'm looking to upgrade my 2020 M1 MacAir (8GB RAM, 8 GPUs, Metal 3). I've cooled off a bit on upgrading until a solution is found.

I tried my hand at removing the reflection in Mike's image.

I found that multiple passes -- Camera Raw Filter>Distraction Removal>Reflections were needed to remove about 2/3 of the reflection (without ever rendering the crazy colored video snow artifacts). The part of the reflection to the right of the faucet was stubborn. A false a-HA moment: thinking that the faucet was interfering in some way, I tried removing the faucet using generative fill but that didn't pan out; the vestige of the reflection was still there.

[three passes were needed to remove the 2/3; more than three passes didn't improve the result]

btw, cropping Mike's image made no difference as to the complete removal of the reflection. My version for grins.
