PS CC crashes every time I try to open a RAW file

I desperately need assistance!

Almost every time I try to open a RAW file (either CR2 or CR3) Photoshop will crash.  This has only started happening in the past month or so. I'm running PS CC24.6 and ACR 15.4. My Nvidia drivers are Studio versions and up to date. I have 16GB or RAM. Opening a jpeg file is no problem whatsoever - it's just RAW that seems to be causing the issue.

There is one weird thing - sometimes I can open and edit the fiiles no problem - others it just crashes in an instant.

As a freelance photographer I really need Photoshop and the benefits that ACR brings to be 100% reliable, but if I cant find out what is causing the problem, I will need to switch to a different software package.

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

As you can see in other replies, I am still getting the problem - crashes upon opening a RAW file.  Thought I'd has it sorted by going back to an earlier NVidia driver - no joy.

Any further thoughts please?

I dont know if this helps any expert identify what the problem...

If I try to open a RAW file straight from the computer folder, PC CC will crash.

If I have the same image as a DNG file, I can open it in RAW and edit to my heart's content, then save as a jpeg.

So maybe the issue is some dialogue in the RAW opening, as DNG to RAW neems ok.....

I may be wrong (I'm def no techie!) but I hope this helps!

That wasn't clear at all. A DNG is a raw file. So what's different?

(Technically, a DNG can contain other types of data too, but that's not the common scenario).

Where do these DNGs come from and how were they created? What's different from the CR2s and CR3s? How did they become DNGs?

Apologise if I wasnt clear...

I have a couple of Canon cameras. The EOS R generates CR2 RAW files. The R5 generates CR3 RAW files. The CR3 is (I guess) a newer version of their older system - although it's been around for a couple of years now. Both file types cause my PS to crash if I try to open them for editing. 

In my desperation to find a solution, I have got a free trial (full featured) of DxO's PureRAW3 software, as it gets great reviews. It's a standalone RAW editor.  It generates a (huge) DNG file and a jpeg. I've foundf I can edit the DNG file in PS - it doesnt crash.

So - yes I agree with you that doesnt seem to make sense at all as a DNG is a type of RAW file - so why can I edit one but not the other??

I'm hoping there's something in my preferences that someone can suggest I tweak to sort this.

sigh....

Scratch that. It worked fine yesterday.

Downloaded the Adobe DNG converter and tried it on a file.  Photoshop CC crashes once again,  so to be clear, it crashes whether its a CR2, CR3 or DNG file.  Jpeg - no problems.

I really dont know what's going on...:-(

There is actually a clue and a smoking gun here. This looks like DxO generates demosaiced files of some sort - not single channel raw data, but RGB data (hence the bigger size).

DNG is just a container format - it can contain different types of data, but usually it is used to convert camera files to the more universally supported DNG instead of proprietary formats. In that standard scenarion, a DNG and a CR2/3 is basically the same thing.

But here it might be something else.

So that points to the raw processing engine itself. And now we have this:

So if unchecking that fixes it, it's a GPU-related issue (again, as it nearly always is).

I will give that a try.  There doesnt seem to be consistency in the crashing.  been out for the day (it's 1627 in the UK right now) and just back in - thought I'd give it a try.  regular RAW (CR3) file opened fine. 

I'll try your advice.

One thought though.  I was having this problem before on a different computer (with no GPU and only 8GB RAM).

I unchecked that box - sadly, problem still persists. 

HOWEVER...

I tried something else which may be a clue (to those more knowledgable that I am...)

As stated before, trying to open a RAW file from the computer's folder causes an immediate crash.

I can open a jpeg, and then if I go to Filter - Camera RAW Filter, I get the majority (but not all) of the RAW edit options, and more importantly, on the six seperate times I've tried it on different pix, edit to my heart's content and it doesnt crash.  I can use the sky/subject/background filters, which I love.  The only thing I dont have access to is the dropdown for daylight/tungsten/flourescent lighting, which is something I use a fair bit although not every day.

Does this help identify the culprit?

That is still consistent with what I said above. You can open RGB files, but you crash with mosaic raw files.

If you unchecked "use GPU to open", then we have a bona fide ACR bug, somewhere in the demosaicing code. The fact that jumps up here is that very very few other users see this. I don't think I've encountered this particular problem here in the forums before.

Now, the definition of a bug is that it hits some people some of the time, not all people all of the time. Then it would have been fixed long ago.

Just to start from a clean baseline, I'd uninstall and reinstall first, and wipe all preferences in the process. Remove any Adobe folders that linger in your user account.

I'd also consider a BIOS update. That can affect how applications communicate with the rest of the system.

I have carried out a clean install.  Same issues as before.  Crash from RAw, no crash if I take the jpeg - filter - camera RAW filter route. 

Please forgive my ignorance - how does it get escalated within Adobe so that a proper fix can be made?

Hi Cory.

Tried that manual reset. Didnt solve the problem.  Immediate PS CC crash when attempting to edit a image file in RAW.

Driver 535.98 appears to have problems, other people have reported it too.

There is a newer driver released after this one, try that.

You can also roll back to 531.68. (that's the one I'm using without issues on an RTX 3060).

Hi!

Well, I am keeping everything crossed, but the issue may be solved....

I updated my NVidia driver to the one that came out yesterday - 536.40. Still had the same problem - an immediate crash upon trying to open and edit a RAW file.

I followed your advice and instead replaced it with an older driver - 531.68.

This seems to be working, and I can open and edit RAW files again.  Thank you!!!

Hopefully it will be stable from now on - yesterday (before the driver updates/downdates) it worked fine for an hour or so, before resuming its crashing, so I'll keep an eye on this.

Cory - I may still need your help again if it does regress.

The thread is already in the "Bugs" section, which is the official bug report channel. It will be read. Engineers come by here regularly to pick up the loose ends. Give it a few days, then bump if there's no further activity.
