Cativate 2017 - Success/failure captions

Our office is trying to resolve a problem with success/failure captions that display far longer than their timing is set to.

The setup is as follows:

  • Software simulation built with 5 sections. Sections 3-5 have text entry and click/box interactions with failure captions. Section 5 is scored.
  • Failure captions are set to 3 seconds in sections 3&4, and 2 seconds in section 5.
  • In preview mode all works well. When published for SCORM 1.2 and loaded to our SABA LMS, the failure captions play progressively slower the deeper into sections 3-5 you get. In section 3 they may display for 10-15 seconds. By section 5 they may display for 30-40 seconds, even though the timing is for 2. It would seem like a (lack of) communication issue with the LMS, but many of these are not scored and report no data. Our modules are also configured to send tracking data at exit.
  • The problem is complicated by the fact that  it does not happen in all courses we develop, is not dependent upon the size of the course, and the development practices used in 'bad' courses are the same as used in the good ones.

We have had some success in the past with copying the simulation slides into a new template, however, a current course in development is not responding to this solution.

SO, if the same developer develops 1 software simulation course from template that works fine, and then develops a second that doesn't, what is the underlying issue?

Did you test that course in SCORM Cloud?

Yes. Tested in SCORM Cloud and the same issue remains.

“It is always possible that the course has been corrupted. You mentioned 'template'? I hope you are not using a cptl file to create a course in cptx? There are problems with cptl-files/”

Well, this is the first time I had heard this! What types of problems exactly?

It is mentioned several times in this forum. look at this recent thread:

Advanced actions and variables are duplicated and often messed up. I never use a cptl-file since quite a while. For Design consistensy a Theme is a much better practice, no need for a template. I compared both in this blog psot:
