Hi Pedro
If you need to control this aspect you need to investigate using Image buttons.

Hi Pedro,
Please fill in a feature request, to have the possibility to change the background color of Text buttons. I'm always creating my own buttons, do use Photoshop indeed because of the layer possibilities.
But something else: you do not need to buy Photoshop (or Flash) to create image buttons at all, you can use Paint! Have first a look at the Gallery with buttons in Captivate (captivate folder\Gallery\Buttons). You will see that those buttons need 3 images (format can be BMP or PNG, both can be created with Paint): one for the 'up', the 'over' and the 'down' state. The first one will be visible when you are away from the button, the second when the mouse hovers over the button and the last when you press the button. Create those three images in Paint, be sure to have the same size for each of them. Then save them as PNG or BMP, where you add _over, _up and _down as last part of the name and copy those images to the Button folder. You can add text to the button etc.

Hi Lily thank you again for this answer
I have done some buttons in PNG already
Regarding to the 3th part software as photoshop or paint or something else
thats what Im saying : why we need to use another software when we can
( if the guys from adobe want ) ... make all cain of thing inside the same app.
or any cain of more functions as shadows, glow, frames, reflections etc...
but unfortunately they dont want to add more ...
Of course if you can use flash or photoshop the options are unlimited ...
but how many people can even use photoshop***
Any way thank you Lily and best regards for you
P.

Hello again,
Did you do exactly what I tried to explain, the names are important. I have some buttons with a Dutch text on it, p.e, a button that has the images Nee_up.png, Nee_down.png and Nee_over.png. I made them really big so you'd better see it and copied them to the Gallery/buttons folder. To insert I use the small folder icon and choose one of the three images, a real button (with the pause, Active and Non-active portions is inserted). But the three states will be automatically there, button will change when you hover over it and when you press it (Down).

Actually, with a little creativity, you already have most of that functionality built into Captivate 5 with all the new whiz bang effects you can add and whatnot.
But I would strongly disagree with adding in "Photoshop" type features. Here's why.
Captivate is already now far more sophisticated application than the simple little screen recording application I met years ago. Like us humans, often as we mature, our metabolism slows and we become a bit bloated as a result. I'd hate to see the development team code Captivate to try to become all things to all people. Adobe has Photoshop. What would be their incentive to code all the Photoshop functionality into Captivate just so folks could create Buttons? Captivate isn't a Button making application and there are many free alternatives available. In addition to what Lilybiri mentioned, you can find a plethora of button making applications out on the web.

I'm going to chip in here in partial support of Pedro on this one. I think it is quite amazing that for the text button you cannot change the default color from grey or the default highlight from blue (not to mention the way too bright yellow box focus).
9 times out of 10, a plain old text button will do the job perfectly fine - it would just be nice to make the basic changes to it so that it fits in with your colour scheme.
Yes you can use image buttons, but that is another step using another program, adding assets to the library, and bulking out the finished published project further.
All the whizz-bang effects that have been added recently are all well and good, but like so many software developers, Adobe can ignore the little features that are basic but really useful because they are not good "headline" features.

Hello,
I agree about the text button (takes over the buttons of the OS) but not about the highlight box. You can change the style of this highlight box as you want, and change the Default object style for it. I never use one of the provided highlight boxes.

Young people is very sensitive if thinks are not nice
we must try to do our best to look as attractive as we can.
yes insert photos and other thinks will make the file heave and difficult to download
thats why I will like to have the option to change the color inside of captivate.
But do not misunderstand me
I really like captivate as a mac user I was searching long time to find some app that makes at least half of
this beutifull program do ...
but as I said " just a little bit more "

I often use buttons that do not look like buttons, so then I do need image buttons

Hi folks
I do understand the need (or desire) to influence the buttons. But with the Text Buttons, I believe all Captivate is doing is tossing some generic parameters and relying on the operating system to handle the rest. I say this because the Buttons do actually take on a different look depending on whether the Captivate movie is being viewed on XP VS Vista VS Windows 7. And I have seen where different visual settings on the operating system affect the way the buttons appear.
Likely this is why they built in the ability to use Image buttons. So that appearance would be consistent across platforms.
Perhaps all you need to suggest to Adobe is to allow the capability of adding text to a Transparent Button. Would that be enough to satisfy the request? Or are you still looking for a full button creation utility to be added in?
As a side note, if you want to influence buttons and create some really cool ones, check out http://www.VistaButtons.com

@Lilybiri - you misunderstand me, I wasn't referring to a captivate highlight box, I was referring to the yellow highlight that appears around a text button when it has focus i.e. you have tabbed to it - you don't have any control over the colour of that focus highlight.
I really don't see why a standard text button can't be more configurable and why it changes from system to system - if you analyse the swf that gets created, you can see that a text button is just like any other flash button - maybe at runtime the flash player passes some system info through to the swf which the button picks up, but if you want that why not have that configurable for the button so have a properties check box that says "text button as system button" - otherwise it responds to a set of properties, including background colour, button highlight (mouse over) and button focus.
Creating bitmap button, over and click states for a button when changing the properties of existing vector shapes in the text button is just overkill if you want a simple, specific colour button - the workings are already there if you look at the generated swf, we just don't have access to them.
....hmmmmm which has just got me thinking if I can create a widget to override the standard text buttons' non existant properties.......I'll have a look at that when I get a bit of spare time.

Hey there Mr. Bloke
Actually you should be able to do that. Well, I think.
I'm not sure where the yellow highlight comes from, but it's always been with us in Captivate. Actually, fellow Community Professional Paul Dewhurst created a gizmo back in Captivate 3 that did this. Check out the link below for more on that. Maybe it will give some ideas.

Hello pedro-perla,
Can you please a feature request to be able to add text to transparent buttons? Even I felt the need many times but have found a workaround to place a transparent text caption on top of the transparent button for now
Thanks,

I agree with everyone. I was using MultiMedia Builder previously. But this program has limitiations, as it wont export a Flash that works with a Mac. So I invested in Captivate. I need the text buttons to be interactive or else i would just use a Text Caption (wich would be nice if they had some interaction too).
I would like to see a text button that i could change color on. here is what i wish i could make my capitvate project look like:

Hi there
You could certainly accomplish this easily by creating image buttons. There are tons of sites out there that allow you to do this for free. You just save the images to your local drive and insert them.
And if you don't wish to rely on a web site, there are some cool button making apps like Vista Buttons.

@Mr. Kirkwood. Any type of Captivate text caption CAN now be turned into an interactive object by the addition of the Event Handler widget from Infosemantics: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/catalog/widgets/interactive/wdgt_event_handler_01
You can use this widget to trigger actions on any Captivate object with a wide variety of mouse actions including rollover, rollout, mousedown, mouseup, click, double-click, and right-click.
Hope that helps.
