Full screen resolution video capture on a mac retina display

Hi there, I'm trying to create a full screen video demo on a macBook with retina display. The screen has a resolution 3072 x 1920, but the video size I get from Captivate when selecting 'full screen capture'  is 1792 x 1120. Does anyone know of a way to record at full resolution?

Hi Julian, welcome to the forum.

I am sorry but I am a Win user and not comfortable with Mac terminology. Capture is done 1 on 1 pixel. In Windows that is done by configuring the display resolution to 100%. Something similar should be checked out on your Macbook. If you don't use a huge external monitor I doubt that will be the case.

I learned from you this Mac term ''device pixel ratio''. You need to check that.

I think it comes down to the device pixel ratio of the retina display (2:1 in my case) on the MacBook.
When I capture on a larger (2560 x 1440 / 1:1) external Thunderbolt display, I get the expected 2560 x 1440 output from Captivate.

Despite being labelled as 1792 x 1120, the Captivate output from the Retina display is way clearer than the 2560 x 1440 video from the external monitor. This feels a bit counter-intuitive!

I reckon it’s got something to do with the way information is squished into the screen in the Retina display (the device pixel ratio). I doubt this is something you can alter in settings.
I think your answer is correct (ie hook up to a different monitor), or (if you're using a 2019 16" macbook like mine), your max screen size will be 1792 x 1120, but the output will still be fab!

I am not sure that have done that: external monitor being primary?

I'll capture on the macbook because the resulting video, although smaller, is of a far higher quality – and will switch it to my primary monitor whilst I do this.
You'll have to forgive me being a newbie, I'm not sure about assigning correct answers! I'm certainly not sure mine is, but your advice to switch to a different screen deffo fixes the problem.
