Captivate 2017
HTML5 output
Two questions about TEBs in a software simulation.
1) In one instance, a user should enter the number 17 into a TEB, and then press a screen button, not a shortccut key. How would you handle the validation of the TEB? I have Validate User Input checked, and I suppose I should activate "Maximum Length" and "Auto Submit", but my tests have so far shown this doesn't work. Maybe I'm missing a step, so it would be helpful if someone could explain how they would do it.
2) In another instance, a user should change the number 0 to the number 4 and press TAB, but in all my tests so far TAB jumps out of captivate to become a browser control. I see this has come up before Tab feature not working in Adobe Captivate Project without being resolved. RodWard?
In both cases perhaps there is simply an elearning standard that I could use as an alternative?
Thank you!!

For issue 1, do you mean that you want the user to input a value and then click a button on screen to validate it? To do this I'd "show button" (under the TEB Properties > Action) and delete the shortcut. You can make the submit button transparent if it needs to go on top of a button in a screenshot from the software.
(I'm unsure if that's what you mean because you mention auto submit, which would not involve pressing/clicking a button.)
EDIT: For issue 2, do you need the TEB to be included in scoring? If not, a not-great workaround that executes an advanced action on focus lost might do in a pinch. I'm not sure if others have come up with better workarounds since I last used Captivate (it's been quite a few years!).

Hi ElaKat,
I wasn't thinking that a button would act as a submit action but that the simulation wouldn't progress unless the user specifically typed 17 exactly. So more of a pause for validation and then progress when validated. I don't really want to add a submit button to a screen full of buttons already.
On issue #2, I believe I've tested an on focus lost solution to no success, but it's at least an alternative to try out again. Thank you.

Ah, I was confused by "press a screen button" and went off on a tangent!
It sounds like your intended method should work -- I've tried setting maximum length to 2 with auto submit enabled and the slide continues once I type in 17 -- so I'm not sure what's going on with your TEB. Hopefully someone else will have an idea! (Maybe sharing a few pics of your TEB settings and the timeline might help others troubleshoot?)

Issue #1: In the Text Entry Box properties, select the Show Button box. Use THAT button as the screen button that you mentioned. Choose a style and make the button match the others in your project.
Issue #2: It is a lost focus issue. Check out the workaround I just posted here: Re: Tabbing in HTML5 (not flash)
