Can a puppet walk in from outside the video boundaries?

I want my puppet to start off camera to the right.

When the scene begins, I want the puppet to walk into view and then start talking.

I do the following: [1] click "Record," [2] use the arrow keys to start the puppet walking in.

The puppet never moves and the recording automatically stops.

Is there a way to do what I want to do?

Thank you!

Thank you for the article on this topic.

My puppet walks absolutely normally (legs and arms move, etc.) when I use the keyboard. So, I know the puppet is configured properly to walk.

However, when I use the method you describe, the puppet slides around with no leg or arm movement.

That said, I kept a link to your article.

Thanks again.

Part of the problem was that there is a bug in the Character Animator software. (I submitted a bug ticket.)

When you go into Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware, many users have to set the Default Input value to "No Input" to get Character Animator to function. (I found two separate threads on this topic.) There seems to be a conflict in the software if you leave the "Default Value" setting to whatever Character Animator specified automatically.

Basically, you'll want to use the transform behavior to position the puppet outside of the scene and then have them walk in once the scene starts. It may take a little bit of practice to get it right since you won't have a good way to see what you're doing at the start of the scene.

I did use Transform > Position X to move him off the right side.

And he is visible in the darkness to the right of the video.

However, the instant I click Record, he disappears.

Using the arrow keys becomes futile since there is no puppet to control.

Hopefully, using the keyframes and the position based walking, you can get the effect you want. The control is a little different, since the walk is being controlled by the timeline. It's simply a different way of doing things.

I created a tutorial on this. It may help walk you through this (no pun intended).

Hope it helps.
