I have a Magewell USB Capture HDMI device that works with other software and as a webcam but Adobe Character Animator gives me the "Selected camera is unavailable".

How can I get this device to work?

Windows 10, Adobe Charater Animator V3.3.1

USB HDMI capture devices like the Magewell are not officially supported by Character Animator.

That said, here's something you might try:

1) In Character Animator press Ctrl - F12 to open the Console

2) In the console dropdown select Debug Database View

3) In the console's search box type "1080"

4) Tick the box next to "CameraTracker::Request1080PCameraMode" to enable it

5) Restart Ch

Technical description:

The Magewell and other devices of this type will advertise all video modes.  So 640x480, 800x600, 1080p, etc.

Unfortunately, if your input source is 1080p then only the 1080p mode will actually work.

Character by default requests 640x480 (which the Magewell advertises as available), but unless your source is 640x480 this mode won't actually work.

The debug database flag will make Ch attempt to select 1080p, which can sometimes get capture devices like this to work.

Please let us know how it works for you.

Best Regards,

Geoffrey

The first thing to do is open the camera panel and check to make sure that your webcam is selected as in this picture:

Yep. I had the Magewell selected. I'm including a screenshot showing it selected and that Character Animator showing that it is unavailable. I'm also including a screenshot of the camera feed working in OBS, and just to clarify, the two applications were not running at the same time. So, there wasn't a conflict of the two apps trying to ingest the same feed.
