ADE -can't download books to ADE on my iMac

I have an imac running the latest Catalina operating system. I have ADE latest version. 

I like to use library books but when I try to download to ADE, it says 

'Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem:

E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12'

My intention if I can achieve that is to then transfer to my Nook ereader.

I have even tried to download a book from the Adobe free sample library, but got the same message.

I have read that this is a common problem for Mac users-is that right, and can I use anything else to achieve this aim?

I tried to resolve this with a 'chat' but was told that this is no longer supported by Adobe.

They assured me that this forum is dealt with the staff who can resolve the issue.

Any ideas?
