ADE does not recognise Kobo device

Launching ADE version 3 (version 4 returns "encountered problem and needs to shut down - Sorry) is OK but fails to recognise Kobo Aura reader. Have tried exiting and restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling ADE but cannot get it to see my reader. Can anyone help?
