Adobe Digital Editions 4.5 will not open any more

Since some time my ADE 4.5 will not open. It appears on the taskbar, and putting my cursor on it I get a picture of it as it it should look if fully opened, but when clicking on it nothing happens; the program does not come up on the screen. Since several months back I am running Windows 10 and have installed all offered updates, but I don't think that is what is causing the problem, which has only started recently. Or could it perhaps have been caused by a recent Windows 10 update?

You can try this:

1) Right click on the Icon and run as admin.

2) Rename the My Digital Edition Folder under your Documents in My Digital Edition.old and start again.

3) Uninstall the current Version and install 3.0: http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html

I found a stupid easy fix by mistake!  Do not plug your digital reader (nook in my case) until Digital Editions has opened.  I have tried all the other solutions here and they did not work for me.
Wish it would just work!!

I reinstalled it and--after reboot--it finally would launch.

All I did to get my ADE working again after the last Windows 10 update was rename the Manifest file in the My Digital Editions folder as oldManifest and restart ADE.

Run as an administrator does not work for me.  It does not open.  Just a kind of oversized icon that does not do anything.  I track it on Task Manager and its CPU usage drops to 0.  Then I shut it down and fume some more.  I have also renamed it in the Program Folder.  No difference.  It is the 4.5.11 and this happened after some Windows 10 updates last month.  Gary B at Microsoft says it is Adobe drivers.  He gave a link to Adobe to reauthorize.  From what I gather you have to have an open program to use those directions.  I think it is the Windows update.

I have tried all the suggestions and ADE 4.5.11 will not start.  Clicking the shortcut and going to the source directory get the same result.  It is doing something since the blue circle shows for a second.  If I delete the MyDigitalEditions folder and try to start ADE a new empty copy of the folder appears but that is all that happens.  The windows event log shows several error event ID 1000, about one per attempt to start ADE.  Each of these also has a event ID 1026 with the same timestamp indicating the .NET framework had an unhandled exception parsing a string.

Hi there,,

I am afraid I am not qualified to do more than the basics, all I can say is that changing my password helped.  It starts to open, does take a minute to load the library then all is well. (I do have several hundred books in the library though!)

Sorry I have no other suggestion to make. Try changing your password and see what happens.

Good luck

Funnily enough I have been have a problem with ade being slower and slower to open until today when it wouldn't open at all.  When I tried to contact Adobe (a pain in itself!) I was asked to change my password, which I did.  ADE then started opening again!

Hello,

I have digital addition 4.5.10 on iconia acer android tablet for a few month now.  Was working all right.

Suddenly, the new books (downloaded on pc and transferred to android) are not in the library anymore.  when android tablet  is connected to pc, I could see: they are there.  but they disappear when I open ade on tablet.

or if I downloaded more than 2 books, ade doesn't open at all.  after I delete new additions, ade opens again.  How to fix that?

Thank you in advance.  Inessa

I have finally found solution:

1) Delete: My Digital Editions folder localed in Documents

2) Reinstall Digital Editions 4.5

3) Open software and you will see that is not showing window, I've noticed that is minimized, so make click in Digital Editions button (taskbar) and press in your keyboard Alt + (Spacebar), you'll see an option to RESTORE, press letter that is underlined and Digital Editions 4.5 should display in your screen again.

How about if it is not opening what so ever? I opened the program once, then I open my computer and my windows 10 updated and the digital edition stopped opening what so ever. I even tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it and nothing.

Nanaky.  I know this answer is marked "Correct" but the link you have given to find version 3.0 does not work.  It goes to a funny screen with a list of blue titles on it (sort of like an index) but none of them lead to a 3.0 download.  I am no longer able to get books from the library since I installed the 4.5 version of ADE.  I am DESPERATE to get back to the older version because it worked.

I am a disabled senior and accessing the library is very important to me because I can't go there in person.  I have been trying to solve this problem for weeks now and am pretty much at the end of my rope.  Please try the link you gave.  It does not work.  Do you or anybody out there, know where to find a valid download link to version 3.0?  I am pretty much convinced at this point that it doesn't exist.  But I sure hope I am wrong.

Hello Kandy,

I don't know if I actually figured anything out but I did get the Version 3.0 to work eventually.  I had originally put it on an older laptop of mine.  Shortly after, I retired that laptop and switched to a newer one. I put V3.0 on that one as well and that is where I saw the activation error.  As a last ditch effort to solve the problem I got my old laptop out and tried using it there.  Lo and behold it worked!!!  Not sure why. I was running Windows 10 on both of them so that wasn't the issue.

It is a pain to have to switch to my old laptop every time I want to borrow a library book but I have done it several times now and it continues to function and I'm very grateful.

Eventually, when I can afford it, I plan to get a newer eReader that comes with OverDrive software already installed.  With that, I should be able to access the library directly, through WiFi, without the need for the ADE software at all.  So I just have to hope my old laptop keeps functioning until I can make that happen.

I'm afraid this 'answer' probably won't be much help to you since I don't really understand what happened and I'm sorry about that.  I hope you find an answer that does work for you.  Good luck!

StarVoyager, I don't know about you, but it has gotten to the point, with me, where I have to keep uninstalling both the 3.0 and the 4.5 versions of ADE, and then re-authorizing the computer and the Ereader, each time I want to read a book.  I went and got a new E-reader, which is lovely, but if I want a library book I can't borrow it directly from Overdrive (instead of using ADE) unless Kobo also sells that particular book.  I can barely stand all the work this takes.
