I downloaded Adobe Digital Reader to use with an e-book I purchased. I was never able to authorize ADR with or without an Adobe ID. It said server  error in both cases. Additionally, I cannot even close the window or uninstall it. When I try to uninstall it, it says it is open and running, but I havve no way to close out of it to uninstall it from my computer. I had this problem, could not authorize.  With Adobe editions 4.5 or even 3.0 there is a box to check to authorize without Adobe ID.  I was using Firefox and I did have a Adobe account.

What I did to finally authorize was to go to Adobe.com and actually log in to my account.  While logged into my account I opened digital editions and then authorized it without Adobe ID (that is checking the box for authorize without Adobe id) - it finally authorized no problem!

I probably could have used my Adobe id and authorized it that way also but it seems the key was to be logged into your account while authorizing Adobe editions.
