Question

Authorizing my nook

I have followed all the procedures for registering my nook with B&N and I also have downloaded ADE and established an Adobe ID the same as my nook's ID.  Everyplace I read I am suppose to be able to open ADE and then plug in my nook and ADE is suppose to recognize it and allow me to authorize it.  I have had no luck as ADE does not recognize my nook when I plug it into to the computer and I can't find any suggestions on how to correct this. Anybody have any ideas as to what I can do.

Thanks

tom

I did everything in the above instructions, and now, instead of getting user not activated, I get Sorry, unable to open this book.  I never have gotten a screen asking to authorize!

DePaul University has cancelled all classes that begin at 1 p.m. or

later on Tuesday, Feb 1, and all Wednesday (Feb. 2) classes on its city

and suburban campuses due to severe weather. All DePaul buildings will

close at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and the buildings will remain closed Wednesday.

All scheduled events and programs for Tuesday evening and Wednesday are

    cancelled.

When the University re-opens, I will reply to messages received after

    closing today.

I finally got my Nook fully functional - thank you for the advice to delete Adobe digital editions.   My next problem was that my husband had already registered all his Adobe programs (Photoshop, etc) on our computer and our computer wouldn't allow me to registere ADE under my name.  I finally gave up - went to my work computer - and downloaded library books in about 2 minutes.  Works for me.  I am now a happy camper.

    thank you for these tips!!!!!

After 1-1/2 weeks of unbelievable frustration, I’ve gotten my Nook authorized for Adobe Digital Editions, and I can read library books on it. In the end, I found the solution among the posts on on-line forums, so am writing to say THANK YOU, and in the hope that I can help someone else.

I have a Mac with OS X, v. 10.4.11.  Forum posts enabled me to relatively easily establish Adobe account, download Digital Editions to Mac, and authorize the Mac. I then borrowed and downloaded a library book into the Mac, but I couldn’t get the book into the Nook because I was unable to authorize the Nook.  Here’s how I did it:

I plugged the Nook into a PC, opened the Nook, and deleted the file named

    “.adobe-digital-editions.”

However…I still couldn’t authorize the Nook on the Mac.  But… in the meantime, I’d found an on-line reference to a Mac widget called “hidden files.” (It can be found on Widget list on Dashboard on Apple Web site; there are two Hidden File Widgets; I used most recent one.) Though I didn’t realize I’d actually previously successfully downloaded, installed and opened the Hidden Files Widget, when I plugged the Nook back into the Mac, I saw a Digital Editions folder on the Nook.  I deleted the Digital Editions folder from the Nook by dragging it into the trash and emptying the trash.

I then tried again to download library book from Mac to Nook.  This time – hallelujah! – Digital Editions (where library book was on shelf), recognized the Nook, and the elusive window to authorize Nook appeared.  So I did – using the same password (email address) to authorize both Nook & computer.

I think I was successful by deleting two items from Nook: the file named “.adobe-digital-editions,” AND the folder named “Digital Editions.”

I found helpful instructions re: authorization at: jclcdownloadables.pbworks.com .  My local library pointed me toward good instructions for downloading from the library at: http://beingruth.com/tutorial-library-books-nook-overdrive/ .

Sorry to go on at such length, but in this case, the devil is truly in the details, so I tried to be as clear as possible.  Good luck!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  I have tried for hours to get my borrowed library books on my Nook - I resorted to reading them on my laptop.

I can now share this knowledge with a few friends having the same problem (credit to you!)

I've been trying for hours to solve this problem.  I have a Mac, and the e-ink Nook (no wi-fi).  I downloaded a library book from the library to my Mac, and I can read it on the Mac.  The nook icon appears in Digital Edition when I open DE on Mac, and I was able to drag book to Nook.   The book seems to be in the Nook - I can see it in the Nook icon on the Mac, and it's in My Documents on Nook.  However....I can't read it on the Nook.  The Nook says either that it cannot open the book, or that the user is "not authorized."  Also, I don't see a Digital Editions folder on my Nook.

Is it that without WiFi, Digital Edition isn't really in Nook?  If that's the problem, how do I download it to Nook, and then authorize Nook?

Hope you'll be able to help; thanks for any advice you can offer.

You don't need WiFi  to use Digital Editions. However, those who had MACs had a different way of authorizing their Nook.  It may be that you will have to find a PC to authorize it so that it will work.  Hook the Nook to the PC  and  delete ADE from your Nook- connect it to the computer and then open the Nook to see the files and delete ADE  - in a MAC you might not see these files that is why you have to use a PC.  Then disconnect the Nook from the PC. Then download ADE to the PC and set it up - remember you  need the same email  for both the nook and for ADE. Since you have already done this on your MAC, be sure you are using that email, etc. Then hook the nook up to the PC and ADE should authorize it.   Disonnect the Nook and go back to your MAC. You should be able to open ADE on your MAC and you should be able to see NOOK  in ADE when you connect it to the MAC.  Now donload the book and  then disconnect the Nook.  Now, in you Nook gotot My Documents and Check for  New Content.  Then try opening the book.  Goodc luck...

I will follow your suggestion. Thank you so much - what an incredibly frustrating experience - and otherwise, I like the nook a lot!

    Tom,

For a complicated reason, I had to do the same. Call 1-800-The-Book and the Techies will walk you through authorizing the NOOK. I can sort of tell you what they had me do, but I don't know if I can remember the sequence correctly.  I made another posting somewhere in this forum outlining it. I had to totally unregister and register my device....but that may have had something to do with another problem I was having. To authorize the Nook, I believe it is as follows:

    Do not open ADE

    Connect Nook to PC

    Open Nook Drive

Delete the Nook ADE and DE files

Safely remove Nook from your PC

    Reconnect the Nook to PC

    ADE Opens on PC

Device Set Up Window shows on PC Screen

    Click "Authorize"

    Click "Finish"

See the Nook ICON on the ADE bookshelf

Drag and drop any book to this Nook ICON

    Safely Remove Nook

See your books in both Libraries. (Nook & ADE)

First, call 1-800-The-Book and their Tech support can help you authorize your device. I don't know if your problem is the same as mine was or even if I am remembering all of the steps in sequence SO DO THIS ONLY WITH THE HELP OF THE NOOK TECHIE. 1. Unregister your Nook by going into "settings" and choosing that option. 2. This step is where I am uncertain of the sequence of events so check with the Nook Techie......Now re-register your Nook, by  using the "exact same" ID as your Barnes and Noble account with the ADE account.  If you did not set up an ID with Adobe, do so by going onto Adobe.com. (You may have to uninstall and reinstall ADE to correctly do this if you haven't set up ADE with an ID, I am not sure.  This will also allow you to use your Nook from other locations than your own computer.) authorizing...Do not open ADE. Connect your Nook to your PC. Open the Nook "removable device (whatever drive that comes up./is) this will show your Nook folders. Find and "delete" the Adobe Digital Editions AND the Digital Editions folders. Safely remove your Nook from the PC (SAFELY remove by clicking on the removable hardware icon on the bottom of your PC screen, clicking USB Storage Device, and clicking Okay. You will then get a message that is okay to remove the device). Now go ahead and "reconnect" your Nook to the PC. If ADE doesn't automatically open on your PC, open your Adobe Digital Editions by clicking on the desktop icon or start menu for that program). "Device Set Up" should appear on your PC screen. Click "Authorize Device" and then click "finish". Any books that were on your nook should begin downloading. Leave them alone while this happens. On Adobe Digital Editions, go to the "Bookshelves" view and your should see the "Nook" icon on the bottom of the left-hand list. If there are any books showing in the library view, click and hold your mouse on the book and drag and drop it onto the Nook icon. Safely remove the Nook from your computer as described above. Check your ADE library and your Nook library. Your books should be showing.

I hope this helps. Just a reminder, I am a newbie to this stuff and am only replaying what I was instructed to do. Please call 1-800-The-Book and their techies will walk your easily through the authorizing of your nook.

I called that number and the call went offshore.  I could not understand what was being said and knew that he did not comprehend my question.  I politely said I could not understand and ended the conversation.  The next day I went to B&N and got help.

I am also having trouble authorizing my Nook.  I followed all these ideas - now I can't even read what is on there!     Here's what I did - I went onto our PC, deleted the folder "adobe.digital.editions" from my Nook, tried to download library books (which I think i did - I later figured out they are under "my documents" not "B&N bookstore" - who knew?     Ok, so NOW I cannot read anything on my Nook - it says "User Not Activated".

I tried what others did - brought up ADE on my Mac, then connected my Nook, but it didn't activate.  Did I miss something?  Help!  I'm TWO months into owning  Nook and still having trouble getting library ebooks (easy to purchase from B&N or get free ebooks from Smashwords).   Advice welcomed!

Goldilocks, the problem was at B and N technical dept. with the gift cards, mine was registered,

but they were unable to put the charge on it for 3 weeks and they kept telling me to have

patience they are working on it.  I talked to them at the store as well and they told me

the same thing, there is a problem with gift cards temporarily, but they are working on it.

Finally today they fixed it.  Why on earth are they selling gift cards if they do not have the ability

to allow one to charge on it?
