Digital Editions 4.5 will not open

I've seen a few older threads on this, but none of those solutions are working for me so I figured I'd post. My Adobe Digital Editions (4.5) will no longer open on my work laptop running (Windows 10 Pro).

Solutions I've tried from other threads:

-Uninstalling/reinstalling

-Running as administrator

-Renaming the My Digital Editions Folder

-Deleting the My Digital Editions Folder

-Installing the program to Program Files instead of Program Files (x86)

-Renaming/creating a new folder within Program Files to install to

-Downloading an older edition (I could not find a non-sketchy link to 3.0, but I found a 4.0 and had no better luck with it)

When I click the icon, it literally does nothing. Not even an error or opening a blank screen. It does not show that the program is running (I'd seen some people suggest their problem was that the app was open but running in a disconnected second monitor screen. I've never connected this laptop to a second monitor, but task manager doesn't show it open anyway so I don't think it could be that.)

Any other ideas?? I'm kind of desperate. I need to use this program for work. It's worked fine for years, and I didn't even recently install an update or anything! I have no idea what changed.

Hi there, I have been having the same issue. Has worked fine for years, nothing changed on my device then all of a sudden it wont launch properly. I could open it, and the icon would show on my task bar, if I hovered over it I could see it, but it wouldnt open to full screen where I could actually use it. I am on Windows 11, but have been on windows 11 for a couple of years and havent had any issues.

Anyways.....this morning I FINALLY got it working to upload my new book to my kobo. I uninstalled everything relating to Adobe Digital Editions on my computer, then I plugged in a USB drive and downloaded it again, choosing the D drive of my USB as the location instead of the C drive on my computer. It finally opened and I could get my book on my kobo. Im hoping Adobe finds a fix to this soon cause using a USB drive isnt exactly the best user experience.

Anyways, maybe give that a try, hopefully it works!

I’m sitting here in 2026 and, suddenly, my ADE doesn’t open. I’ve done everything in this thread. I’m trying to use the “correct answer christine_7899” response and loaded ADE to a USB drive. Nah, didn’t work. But, I am curious: the installation process put an icon on my desktop. That icons properties put the target location as the USB drive. But, it puts the Start in location as my desktop. This looks wonky to me. Can anyone clarify the correct properties for the app. As of today, I’m dead in the water. Thanks

Struggled with this, but turned out the app was opening on an invisible desktop. I used the Windows Key + Arrow left/right keys and managed to get it onto my monitor. Very weird bug.

I found the same issues. Then found windows 11 does not automatically keep NET Framework 3.5. that is needed to run Adobe Digital Editions.  I did the following:

This is the standard method for most Windows 11 users (builds 25H2 and earlier).

    1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, type "Turn Windows features on or off", and select the top result.
    2. In the window that appears, locate .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
    3. Check the box, then click OK.
    4. Select "Let Windows Update download the files for you" when prompted.
    5. Restart your computer if prompted.

I've tried 10 different things and actually changing the folder location for the installation is the only thing that solved the issue . Once I tried another folder, it opened after installation, thanks for the idea!!!1
