this issue only happens with epub files, see if you can download an alternative from play books it works fine for me.

Yeah, but .pdfs don't quite have the functionality of epubs. And most books don't have the pdf option. Out the the last 4 I bought, only one had the pdf option.

I share your dislike of PDFs, they just don't work like ePubs, at least on an ereader. I returned my Google Play Books, the refund was very prompt, and I bought them from Kobo.

I try to chat with a Specialist today
And the Specialist told me that a "official engineer" will reply our prolem
(in Chinese)
I told him/her that there's not any "official engineer " reply in this topic no matter which language
The specialist just told me keep leaving message here and engineer will notice.
And I can't get refund in Google Book
That's quite funny.

Same issue here. Tried with two PCs and with fresh ADE installation.

Like many, I have the exact same issue. Problems only presents itself with books bought through Google Play Books, other sources all work fine.
Left a remark on the google support forum as well, looks like a few of us are complaining here and there to get the message through to Google. Hope they take this seriously...

I exported an .acsm from Google Play Books and when I tried to open it in Adobe Digital Editions, I got this. For your reference I authorized with my Adobe account (instead of Google) because the Google one didn't exist.

I have this same issue with Google Play ebooks purchased on Sep 26. The issue appears to be recent because I was able to successfully use ADE for my Google Play ebooks purchased last month on Aug 27. Today, I purchased the same ebooks on Kobo and ADE worked fine with them. So looks like a Google Play issue. I have contacted Google Support and they have escalated the issue. I will post an update if learn anything helpful from Google.

Google Play *free* epubs download okay
I've been waiting for my BookBub daily bargain email to offer a free/no charge ebook as they sometimes do. I've noticed the freebies (whether from Google or other ebook sellers) seem to always be DRM free, rather than DRM licensed with no payment required. They download directly to one's device without any involvement of Adobe Digital Editions. I selected this one (Silent Trail by Blake Pierce) from Google Play just now and there were no issues downloading the epub from Google. The problem is definitely in their DRM licensing system.

Some of the books, free or paid, are DRM free. It all depends on the publisher. I went through Google's free section and downloaded several books. Those free books that had epub DRM, did not open in ADE. Same error.
There is something with Google's licensing system that ADE has a problem accessing.

Also having the same issue with books recently bought on Google. Have tried contacting Google and Adobe and haven't received any useful feedback from any. Just the basic "try to install/reinstall, restart your computer" etc.

Yes you are right. I never purchased a book on Kobo. The download option of the book I'm interested in is:
ChatGPT tells me that this is also DRM-protected. Do I understand it correctly that the process is the same but Google seems to struggle to verify that I can read it whereas with Kobo this verification currently works?

Almost all ebooks are protected with some sort of DRM--Adobe DRM is one of the most common ones for ePubs. That's why you need Adobe Digital Editions to use these Adobe DRM protected ebooks to use them outside of the ecosystem they were built for, like with Google Play Books outside of the Google Play Books app.
As far as I can tell, the only ebooks that are struggling to use Adobe Digital Editions are Google Play ones. Kobo is not having this problem. I recommend purchasing your ebooks through a provider that isn't Google to avoid this problem.

Thanks guys! I requested a refund and I'll purchase the book on Kobo and hope in the near future with my next purchase Google will work again.

Kobo books can be read only on Kobo devices. This is the main reason I stay away from them. All of these providers are trying to lock us in to their devices. B&N stopped allowing downloads of their books in order to lock us into being able to read them only on Nook. I believe they recently retired their Windows desk app, as well. Amazon, of course, markets "Kindle only" books. Up to this point, Google has been a place one could buy an ebook at a discounted price, and read it on any tablet or reader that had an app that handled DRM.
Myself, I was buying books on Google because the largest offer of discounted books was available there; and, I could download the book and have my own copy. The most I ever paid for a book was $6.99, and that was exceptional. Most of my purchases were $1.99-$2.99. I browsed the collection looking for books I knew I wanted, at the price I wanted. Well, this fiasco put an end to that. More money for pizza on Friday night. I already own so many books, I could read 8 hrs a day until I died and not get through them all. (The spouse is not laughing about it, either.)
Discounts on books seem to be coming from the publishers or distributors, because any book that's discounted at Google is also discounted at Kobo, and vice versa. Not every book available at Google has a corresponding title on Kobo, however.

I hope you're not right about this. It would be dirty dealing for Google to unilaterally do away with a function, lie to customers about it and pretend it's nothing to do with them.
Kobo (I haven't bought from other ebook sellers in years) are still allowing download of the epubs to ADE. Libraries do, too. I tend to only buy books after checking if I could get them (even with a wait of some time on hold) through our library. For authors I consider special I make exceptions to that money saving policy.
