When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!
This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.
For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

I had not heard that Overdrive will be phased out next year. This is not good news. Will there still be the Libby App do you think? I don't use that myself, but my husband does on his tablet. I always preferred to have an ereader. Thanks for the info.

OK, so I just contacted my library and the Libby app will be the only way to get books from the library going forward. Of course Kobo wants you to use their app and buy books but if we want to use Libby there will be some convoluted way (supposedly) that will force us to use Adobe Digital again and we all know how well that works. The other problem I have is that Libby does not seem to be available for my laptop, only my phone. Looks like I will have to dump my Kobo when overdrive goes away, and get a tablet. So frustrating. Thanks for letting me vent.

I was so tired of wasting so much time and energy with trying to downgrade, downloading ADE in different versions to different platforms (Mac/PC) and having zero luck, that I just decided to go buy a new e-reader. I'm very happy with my new one - the old one was pretty slow old and, it was just time. Worth the investment for how much I like to read. And I solved the problem because now I could link directly to my Overdrive via Wi-Fi. I have read many books since which are so easy to grab from the Library without ever connecting to a computer.
Until recently. The last book I tried to borrow, I got an error on the Kobo from Overdrive. I tried rebooting, and I tried downloading over the course of several days in case the error was on their end, to no avail. So. I download it to my computer, connect the NEW Kobo and try to sync with ADE. You guessed it. Same old sh*tty issue. This is unbelievable that this has been now going on for over 5 years (and with a new device). And now I hear that Overdrive is being phased out? I hope they figure out a new fix so that I can continue to use my Kobo for my local library books. I can't stand reading on a computer or tablet, the whole reason I invested in an e-reader in the first place was so that I could avoid the backlit eyestrain inducing light when I want to read for hours.
I did try the solution written on here in regards to the activation.xml file but on my Mac I'm not seeing what is described above. I may try to devote some more time and effort. I'm just ticked, I was on the wait list for about 3 months for this particular book and now I have it but I have to read it on my computer screen (which I refuse to do and now that I've borrowed it I can't try to go get it anymore directly from my Kobo). So. I'm waiting in line for the physical copy from my library (which overall is the very best way to read anyhow, but I love the ease of borrowing with my Kobo and it's a very close second to a physical book). At least the real copy of the book can't be inundated with the bugs and licencing rights that these stupid Overdrive/ADE/Kobo face. Thanks for letting me rant.

Maybe not much of a consolation for you, but last night I was able to download a library book through Libby directly to my Kindle Paperwhite, no problem. I haven't tried yet to download library books to my Kobo Clara, so I don't know if that works. I use my Kobo Clara via ADE on my computer primarily for reading ebooks from the OpenLibrary/Internet Archive -- books that aren't available as ebooks in retail online stores or from the regular library. I am print-disabled so access to ebooks is important to me.

Interesting. I did hear back from my library that I can just go to the Libby website (which then goes directly to my library website when I put in my card number), so no app needed! That is the good news anyway. Today I am going to try to check out a book through Libby and then try to get it to my Kobo. Will let you know if it works. So Nan, I hope you will also let us know if you are able to use ADE and your Kobo!

So I am replying to my own message, but I tried using Libby to transfer a EPUB file (PDF not available) to Adobe digital and then to my Kobo. No luck, just the same message as always. In going to the website for Kobo, it makes it all sound so simple, even tho they say they do not support the Libby app. They did eventually make an Overdrive account available, so is it too much to hope they might update to Libby when Overdrive goes away? I can dream I guess. Hate to give up my Kobo, but if they can't find a way to work with Adobe digital, guess I will have to. Looked at Kindles the other day and in order to get a fairly decent price on those, you have to accept ads running on your device. Crazy! I had a Nook before and that worked at first, but also started having problems with Adobe digital on that too. I really don't want a tablet, too clunky to carry around. A lot of people on here say to go back to 3.0 Adobe, but that has never worked for me either. OK, done with my rant.

As of Dec 2022, there is no fix and no support available from Adobe for issues that involve Adobe Digital Editions and discontinued Kobo models (i.e. Kobo Glo HD).
Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 is NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD from Adobe; a link on their own 4.5.11 download page leads to a troubleshooting screen instead.
Hate to say this because overconsumption is a huge problem in this world, but if you have an older Kobo that doesn't work properly with ADE and Overdrive, it's probably best to get a new Kobo or just use your cel phone or tablet with newer apps like Libby.

Hi,
So apparently the problem is not only with discontinued Kobo. I just got a brand new Kobo Sage and I have this ADE problem. Which for me, may be a deal breaker because I need to use ADE to borrow books from my local public libraries. I am very confortable with technology, and I spent 5 hours trying every fix I found, but unfortunately nothing worked. I'll problably return my Kobo and buy another brand. Open to suggestions if you have other brands to recommand - ideally not Amazon/ Kindle. Thanks!

So sad to hear that even the new Kobos don't work with Adobe Digital. I am part of an informal group of friends that share good book titles etc and I posed the question to them about how they read ebooks. Only one person had a Kindle (which he no longer uses) and everyone else used Ipads or tablets, which is fine if your library uses Overdrive/Libby but not sure about ADE on those. Something I still have to look into.

I had too many problems using ADE to copy books to my kobo so I ended up buying a new Kobo Clara which has Overdrive so now I can borrow from library directly to my Kobo now without having to go through ADE. This is working well so far but there have been a few times where the borrowed book does not appear in my kobo. I have tried syncing my Kobo; turning it off and reconnecting to the wifi and re-synced and I still wasn't able to access the book on the Clara. When this happens, I end up reading the book on the Libby app on my phone. You can also sync the Libby App to your desktop and read it on your laptop if you prefer.

A recent post here led me to this link that WORKED:
https://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/digitaleditions/ADE_3.0_Installer.dmg
I followed the instructions found here (the 3.0 installer link is included in the body of the text):
And it worked for more than just one random book. So glad because a Kobo Glo HD is lighter, more compact and easier to handle than the current iPad iteration we have!

It's just near impossible to find a download link for ADE 3.0; I spent a whole day looking just a couple of weeks ago. Someone posted a response with working links yesterday (I think) on another thread, so I'm just re-posting them wherever I can so they're easier to find. (Adobe customer service won't provide a 3.0 link; their official answer is that there is no support available for discontinued software and services. #UGH)
So far so good with a Kobo GLO HD!

Unfortuntely the 3.0 version is not supported on my mac (recent mac book air), the error message wants to force me dowload the most recent version, and doesn't allow me to open the app 😞

I had this issue with not being able to download 3.0.
This is what finally worked for me:
I don't know if it's a bug with holds or what, but so far this has worked for me for my last 3 books!

This worked for me too! It is infuriating and so annoying how much time I have wasted trying to get this to work. I went as far as to buy a whole new eReader that I'm now probably going to return. And it would be FREAKING GREAT if Adobe figured out why this was happening and fixed it so we wouldn't have to mess around and import a whole extra book that we don't necessarily want.

Hey! did you drag them both into the ereader at the same time too? I did this and it STILL doesn't work. I don't know what to do at this point. I am so so so mad!

Thank you so much for this reply but I'm still getting that same message for both the book I had on hold and one I just borrowed that wasn't on hold! And they have black covers when transferred to my kobo for some reason. Any insight!? So annoying!

To Clarify, the download the .pdf (random book) and transfer it to your reader did work as instructed.

When I try to use ADE, I also get the black covers and the usual error message. But I found that when I use Libby, I don't have to use Adobe at all, but if your library doesn't use Libby, I am sorry that I have no solutions for you.
