When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!
This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.
For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

I think all of us who are having problems should talk to our libraries/bookstores about the problem, and get them to intervene with Adobe. If the ebooks don't work for their clients, they have no reason to buy them which gives them more clout than we, the ordinary reader, have.

I was able to successfully add to my Kobo the last two e-books I borrowed. The one thing I did different was - on the download instead of directly opening into ADI I saved the file into my downloads. Then I went to the downloads and from there opened the file into ADI. I was then able to transfer the file from ADI to the Kobo successfully. I don't know if these were just flukes?

So so frustrated. I am a senior user so not a techy.I have so enjoyed using my KOBO for downloading library books, it's easy and I don't have to carry heavy books home but as of yesterday same problem. KOBO is not authorised to open these epubs. I am devasted. Online is great if you are savvy with it. I am not so am terrified of wiping every thing from my device if I muck about with it. Same old story get you to buy it then take away the ease.

OMG !!! I have just tried this with two different libraries and two different authors and it worked for both after failing to transfer a book using the other method. My husband just bought me a new Kobo for Christmas because I wasn't able to download any books with my other one and I thought I'd cry when this new one started doing the exact same thing. The odd thing is that this is the method I used when I first got my first kobo a few years ago but when i realized I could transfer it directly to my library and cut out the downloads step that's what I started doing. I will never cut out steps again if this continues to work !!! Thank you

IT WORKED! Thank you!!! I've been trying for a couple hours for the last 3 days to find something that worked!
What blows me away is that this issue has been going on for years now - the post from ronc73269033 is almost two years old and solved my problem today. Whatever the issue is, it's still not been addressed/resolved and only the lucky ones who manage to stumble across this have been able to use their eReaders again for library books.
The compatibility with Overdrive is the reason I chose a Kobo in the first place. Seems to me that Kobo has no interest in making sure people haven't any obstacles to using their eReaders for borrowed books. I'm sure they'd rather we all pay them more money to buy books. And Adobe is unlikely to throw much support behind something that is free, but hey, Adobe, people might be happy to pay from something that actually worked - I know I would.

Install ADE 3.0, it solves everything

That worked for me for almost a year before it became useless

Had the same problem...installed ADE 3.0...we had some issues with an activation error but you can search how to fix that and once done works like a charm!

ADE 3.0 worked for me as well. However, I had to unathorize my computer ADE 4.5 and then install ADE 3.0 and reauthorize.

Bin there undone that. I would remove the updated Adobe 4.5 and reinstall and reauthourize my laptop and KOBO e-reader, but after a month it would become useless again even if it didn't update. I bought a new kobo figuring that my Glo was now too outdated to work and guess what. New Kobo. Same problem. North American libraries should open source DRM and get rid of the entire cluster.... that is aka Kobo and Adobe.

Where is the solution to this. Adobe costumer service was absolutely no help.

Similar problem here. The download of a library ebook to my authorized PC (WIndows 10). And I was able to copy it to my Kobo via USB cable. But when I tried to open the ebook on the Kobo, I was advised that my reader was not authorized to open this DRM file. Then I attempted to authorize it with the same Adobe ID as my PC, but was duly informed that that ID was not recognized. Ridiculous! Then I downloaded ADE 3.0 to use instead of 4.5, but the same thing happened. Can anyone help me? Signed, Frustrated!

Hi! I have been advised that it is the DRM platform causing the problem? They
will now only let you have books that you have paid for. ADOBE are not
interested and all KOBO tell you is to de-authorise your KOBO from ADOBE, put
your KOBO back to factory settings and start again. This has been tried but
does not work.
Like you I am so frustrated. This was such an easy way for seniors to continue
library book reading. I am waiting to hear from my local library but nothing so
far.
Kind regards

Thanks for that info. I also email my local library to seek assistance, but have yet to receive a reply. If this is indeed the problem, the library system is going to take a serious hit in their lending.

Agree! Why should they waste the publics money buying books that we cannot
read? I only just this minute realised that you cannot even open the books on
the laptop to read. Is it the same for you? If so then ADOBE need to get on the
case because even the ADOBE platform is not performing surely?

I can open it on my PC with no issue, but not my Kobo. Who would want to sit at a desktop computer to read a book? It kind of defeats the purpose of reading for relaxation. Somehow, the Adobe platform is corrupted.

Thanks katrinaj33799259. This worked for me too, once I followed the last step:
"You may also need to reauthorize your computer if you install an older version of ADE."

I found that my device and computer were both authorized the same (with my Overdrive account) but when I borrowed books from the library, I did so with my library card login rather than my Overdrive login. So when I transferred things onto my device it would not open.
I did what others suggested (deauthorize device and computer, reauthorize both, redownload book, etc.etc) and none of it worked. I also tried using the old edition of ADE as well as a new one, and that didn't help me. But when I logged out of my library account and logged back in using my Overdrive account, I was finally able to transfer (and open) the library book on my e-reader.
Hope this helps!

I had the EXACT same issues with my Kobo and library books! This is what I did, not sure if some steps are unnecessary, but I wasn't taking any chances (been at this for several hours). I am using a Mac OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 for the record.
1. I deleted Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.8 off my computer (sent the files to the trash from Applications, and then hit "Empty Trash")
2. I went here and I downloaded Adobe Digital Editions 3 for Mac: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/digitaleditions/ADE_3.0_Installer.dmg
3. After install ADE 3.0, I deauthorized my computer (Command + shift + D).
4. I reauthorized my computer.
5. I downloaded and opened my ebook (saved it to downloads, right clicked, and selected "Open with Adobe Digital Editions 3.0").
6. I plugged in my Kobo.
7. I deauthorized my Kobo.
8. I reauthorized my Kobo.
9. I copied my book onto my Kobo.
10. I exited out of ADE 3.0, and ejected my Kobo from my computer.
11. FINALLY OPENED MY BOOK ON MY KOBO!
Again, not sure if all these steps are necessary, but after having to do an unnecessary factory reset I was taking no chances!
