Question

My Nook finds the downloaded books and is authorized but will not open them, any ideas how to fix?

I finally got the Nook to find the books I loaded through DE, but they will not open,  B & N seems clueless and the local lib is working on the problem.  Meanwhile both books I downloaded are about to be overdue!  I could use some help!  Thanks!!

Try disabling the Wi-Fi and then opening the book. I had a similar problem and once I disabled the wi-fi, the books opened.

I have had the same issues multiple times!  My hubby (who is a computer guru) fixed it one time, but it took him hours and he had do reset everything--it was a real pain.  I had the same problem again today, because I have a new computer and had to reinstall everything.  My hubby messed around with it for about 2 hours, then he found a new software program.  Calibre Portable.  It worked like a dream, and was so much easier to use!  No longer using Adobe if I can help it!

I much prefer to use Calibre when possible, but unfortunately it will not read/process DRM books,

such as bought books and library loan books.

I read thru these posts and someone said "Make sure the download from the library is EPUB format". I had downloaded 2 books in PDF format and could not get them to open on the Nook. The nook was properly authorized with ADE. I then downloaded an EPUB book and everything worked fine. The Nook opened it normally. I don't know why PDF didn't open but apparently EPUB adjusts font size to fit the reader and I guess PDF doesn't? Maybe B&N can tell me why. Hope this helps.

This may not be helpful but I see that lots of other people have the same issue. Does your Nook come with a user guide? I tried to find one on-line like I did with Kobo but no luck. There is usually a trouble shooting page that deals with that very issue.

Actually, I have a kobo and for some obscure, arcane reason it fixed itself.  I think it heard me muttering in the background!

    Thanks!

I just found out that my local B & N is now offerring help sessions for the Nook (6PM Wed in my area).  They are willing to assist with the library book issue.  You can bring in your Nook and your computer and they will assist. So maybe check with your B & N and see if you can get resolution there.  I have not had a chance to do this.  Will update when I have!

The last time I had an issue, I deleted the folder the xml file was in and then Adobe recognized my Kobo.  Now I've had to do that again but - oh no! - Adobe does NOT recognize my device when I plug it back in.  What now? I can't restore the xml file, when I trashed it, it totally disappeared.  Any hep would be appreciated.

    November 10, 2010

Did you remove the folder in which the .xml file exists?

Yep - and finally it's working again.  Thanks for checking up - I appreciate it!  I think the problem is in the device, not ADE.

I was getting the 'User not authorised' message after I had linked the Nook up to the ADE software and thought I had  authorised it.  No such luck. After looking around the ADE software for a way of re-authorising the device I found the solution.

Using the Nook as a USB device find the folder '.adobe-digital-editions'  It contains one small XML file, which if you open contains the data about the machine.

DELETE the folder completely including the content (1 file).

    Unplug the Nook.

Then bring up ADE, plug in the nook. It will then recoginise the Nook and ask you to authorise! Agree and it work correctly for me.

This time perfect - the EPUB DRM books open a treat and the Nook is now recognised. Whats the difference I don't know but it certainly worked for me.

I would be easier if Adobe established a de-authorise and re-authorise function in ADE.  Until then the above worked for me and now I will be keeping my Nook!

For Library book you must transfer the books to the nook (or any other reader) using ADE.  Specifically just copying the file to the nook in the Explorer/Finder will not work, is this what you did?

    May 22, 2010

I'm having the same problem.  Called B & N, but they do not "trouble shoot ADE". I don't really understand the response below (sorry - I'm technically disinclines).  I dragged my library book from my ADE folder (on my hard drive) to my "Documents" folder on my nook.  It's there, but when I try and open it it says "opening document"  .... and then returns me to the menu.  How do I "transfer books using ADE"?  Can you please give specific directions?  I would so appreciate it - then I could read books from the library !!!! yay!!!

Do not use the Finder (Mac) or Explorer( Windows) to transfer Library books, it won't work.   You must use ADE (just drag the book from the Library onto the Nook folder).
