trying to print my ebook from Adoble Digital Editions - the print button is grayed out - help

I am a first-time user with Adobe Digital Editions.  I downloaded an e-book, and it will let me view it in "read mode," but when I try to print it, the print button is grayed out, not allowing me to select print.  I then tried copying the text and pasting it in a Word document, and it will not allow that either.  I have already registered my computer with the Adobe program - is printing now allowed or something?  Thank you for any help you can give me!
