Adobe CS5 upgrade won't recognize new CS3 serial number from Adobe

My computer crashed recently and I re-installed Adobe CS3 using new serial number directly obtained from Adobe today on Windows 7 Professional. I am trying to re-install the CS5 upgrade that I purchased in 2012 (I think). These are legit copies. CS5 upgrade won't recognize new serial number. Online chat useless, representative didn't even know that Adobe had retired original CS3 numbers, kept telling serial number was invalid, and asking me for screenshot over and over.

,

What can I do? Will Adobe help me if I call them and give me some kind of dummy number I can use? I never registered either item previously, tend to be hyper-vigilant about giving companies my name and phone number when purchased way back when due to privacy reasons.

Thanks in advance.

I entered the original number also, which was not recognized either.  As the computer had crashed there was no need to delete the program.

Neither serial number works.

I read in another forum that an Adobe representative helped soneone by giving them a generic serial number for a similar issue.

For the present moment I entered the CS5 upgrade as a trial version (it’s not) with a serial number I found on the web.  I have no idea how long it will work and am going to see if Adobe will help me on this.

Will get back.

CS3 Activation servers were taken offline.  The procedure for obtaining a new CS3 installer and serial number that does not require activation is described in the correct answer below.  Note, this won't work with your old disks.

Re-activating CS3 (Updated)

For best results, wipe Creative Suite off your computer before installing the replacement version.

What happens if you enter your original CS3 serial number?

I have never heard of Adobe providing a "dummy" number to complete an upgrade install, so calling or going on Chat will be the way to find out

The special serial number you obtained from Adobe is only intended to allow you to use CS3 after the original activation servers were retired. It won't be recognized when trying to register an upgrade, because that requires a serial number associated with an actual purchase.

Therefore, what you need to do when prompted for a qualifying product during CS5 installation is enter the original CS3 serial number you got when you bought the software. Since you didn't register the product, hopefully you have it stored or written down somewhere (Find your serial number). You could try calling Adobe, but it is unlikely they will provide you with a replacement serial number, especially not without concrete proof of purchase.
