I am new to adobe flash development . I have a .swf file and corresponding .exe file. We don't have the source code. It was lost when the machine was crashed and the person who developed it is no more with us. I need to make some changes to the application and I am new to adobe flash development.Could any one please let me know:
- How do I retrieve source files from .swf file?
- WHat software exactly I need to make changes, debug and run the code. and how to create .exe file with the changes
Thank you very much in advance

Before you start: are you aware that Flash Player is near the end. By the end of 2020 nobody will be able to run SWF. Each browser is blocking before the end of 2020. Firefox users will be blocked before then.
You will need do start development again in another way, not using Flash. So I recommend you focus on that rather than on working hard on the SWF which will be dead in a few months.

Thank you, So I have web based application which uses the application used by this SWF file. So if browser blocks it before the end of 2020, then my web based application will not be able to use it anymore?
However, at time being I need to make changes to this application with which .swf is created. So, any guidance with respect to that would be really helpful
Thank you,
Shwetha.

That’s correct. Your SWF based application will be useless before the end of 2020. Sooner, just a few months for some users. Already using Flash is very inconvenient.
If you are determined, you might look for an “SWF decompiler”. The task will not be quick or easy.

Thank you!
I installed JPEXS compiler and decompiled swf file. Now I want to run or debug the project. It is asking for flash player projector path and content debugger path. I downloaded flash projector, but when I open .swf file in that and click on create projector, the application just exits. Could you please let me know what is the problem

The problem is you need the native Flash project (.fla) files. Without them, you have nothing to work with. And that is the end of that saga.
Your urgency just shifted to re-building without Flash because Flash player support is already dead for most people.

Thank you . Fortunately, that is not the end of it yet. I decompiled swf file and converted .as files to .fla file. Also realized that application is an Adobe air application. Now I have .fla files. Will try to create the project using those .fla files. I am new to Adobe. Just started exploring it. Is Adobe air also going to be obsolete by 2020?

No.

I'm glad you found a workaround. I don't know what plans Adobe has for AIR technology. I haven't heard anything.
